The only reason Gilmore is top of the leaders poll is because his rivals are so poor, don't be fooled.

If you think we are in trouble now we would be even more f**ked with him at the helm, the social partnership deals Ahern sold out to would be in the halfpenny place compared to what Labour would impose!

Is there any way we can subcontract the running of the country to some competent people?

Like the Canadians or something? It would probably be for the best if we took Irish politicians away from the controls before they make things any worse.

Probably for the best actually.....Canadians are nice people if not a little dry, solid though - maybe we should just send a letter and ask them...anyone have the address??

Even better, get competent professionals in to run the country, experts in their field. The country is littered with talented people but yet we are stuck with mouthpieces like Biffo / Lenihan / Coughlan who need to get advice on how to write their name. Get some professionals stuck in to the running of the country quickly and let the elected politicians convey the policies that will get us out of this shyte instead of them pretending to know what they are talking about.

No! Jesus no! Can we not do something along the lines of Wife Swap and do leader swap where Biffo can have a crack at Ryanair for a week and O'Leary can come in and do his worst for a week :D

I think you might have got a better response if the topic was called 'Best Case Scenario' cabinet. Are you putting Micheal Martin as Taoiseach because of his performance in Foreign Affairs? That's a fairly hard portfolio to **** up tbh.

Martin has had stellar performaces in many of his Cabinet positions. Smoking ban was him. Anyway good to get a Corkman back in charge...

Cam't understand why people list 'Gaeltacht' as part of a future government. It's just a welfare department for people who pretend to to be indigenous Irish speakers. We could just merge it with Social Welfare.

    Bord Snip thinks it's redundant.

And while we're at it we could merge the Department of Finance with Social Welfare given the billions upon billions it is giving to bail out Irish banks, property developers and other parasites of this society. In fact, let's just scrap (rename?) Finance and create a new Department of Corporate Welfare.

The Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs receives a pittance - an absolute pittance - in comparison. But the pittance goes to ordinary people so I suppose that would be a problem for a certain type of thinking.

That's a fairly measured and dispassionate list in fairness to you. Mícheál Martin would, I also believe, be a good Taoiseach. I still think one of the most progressive things the government of this state has done during my lifetime has been to introduce the smoking ban. He has had failures, sure, but having served in government for over ten years those failures have been relatively minor (in the wider scheme of that service). I am particularly impressed with his cultural openmindedness; he is conscious of trends beyond Britain, and that is a depressingly rare characteristic among Irish politicians. Instinctively, for this reason, I respect the man's world view.

Ó Cuív, a born and bred Dubliner, has proved to be a surprisingly good advocate for Irish speakers and rural Ireland in the cabinet, even if his ideas on granting planning permission in rural areas are repellant to me. I also think Michael D. would be a great minister for the Gaeltacht, and it is Michael D. who takes full credit for establishing TnaG back in 1997. I have a lot of time for Michael D., especially after that former US diplomat George Dempsey told him on the Late Late Show to go away and write some more poetry and stop engaging in US foreign policy (the audience jumped in to support Michael D).

I don't like the Brutons, but Richard looks like he'd be a much more rational and intelligent minister than his brother was Taoiseach (yes, I am alluding to the North). I'd like George Lee in government, if only to disarm him; there are far too many people making a living out of lecturing the government on what should be done, while they themselves have taken no risks and cannot therefore make mistakes. Too many people are romanticising the Opposition.

As long as Brian Hayes, a reactionary protégé of John Bruton if ever there were one, is not in any government I'd be relatively happy.

PS: Éamon Ryan is very impressive and innovative as Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. For me, he is the surprise of the current government.
