    Going to be in the market for a car soon and I'm looking for a diesel saloon so its the boring Mondeo/Avensis/Passat/Primera's of this world I'm looking at and this seems reasonable enough but I know people tend to overprice their cars a bit;

    http://www.cbg.ie/Car_Detail.aspx?ID=3469005#

    Major plus is that it's NCT'd til 5/11. It seems a good car, the 120k wouldn't scare me. Mondeo's are generally reliable, she won't be too hard on juice. Not a bad first car as first cars go.

    Minus: The tax @ €614 is pricey though I guess its only €12.50 if you break it down. I'm not sure I'll get insured on it either as I'm only 21 despite full licence for 3yrs, clean record for 4 years - I know what the craic is like with insurers and my 'performance' car :rolleyes:

    I'm thinking €3500 would be my offer?

    From what i have seen the bigger players: Allianz, Quinn and Axa wont offer younger drivers insurance on big engine cars whereas the likes of 123.ie are more inclined to.

    My advice would be to make sure you can get insured in it first before even considering buying it.

    Yep, I'd say €3,500 to 3,850. Excellent cars, I've got one. Way ahead of the other cars mentioned above in terms of ride and handling. Try FBD for a quote, call in person to one of their offices. I wouldn't bother troubling yourself with Quinn.

    The Mondeo TDDi LX only has around 90/100bhp which is pretty poor for a 2.0 litre diesel. It is also very loud and a rattly diesel engine but on the plus side the mechanics are simple enough.

    But to be honest I would try and find the more modern and refined Zetec TDCi in 115bhp or 130bhp.

    This is something that I'm curious about; is that solely a power choice? Is the car badly underpowered with only 90bhp? Now I won't be racing it or anything, it's going to be doing a 120km (in total) round trip per day 5 days a week so obviously fuel effiency and reliability are the main concerns for me.

    Cheers for the replies lads.

    The TDDi would probably be more reliable than the TDCi as it is a old skool diesel engine with simple mechanics. It will easily manage 120kph though.

    The TDCi however is a more refined unit using common rail technology and more economical but has been known to suffer from injector failure at around 100k miles which is expensive to put right.

    The LX model generally came with 90bhp. It's OK for motorway journeys, but is a bit on the sluggish side for acceleration. The 115bhp version of the engine in the Zetec is much better if you can find one in the price range.

    With regulare servicing they will run and run, but the clutch and dual mass fly wheel will go - usually around 100,000 I think so check if that's been done. I know a few turbo's have gone around that mileage as well, but that probably depends on how it's been driven.

    Price seems quite good compared to others advertised. Here's one a year older for the same money, but the Zetec 115bhp version.

    Should be able to get either for €3,500.

    Good luck with the insurance.
