    Hey all!

Ive my first orthodontal visit in the morning, which im less than thrilled about!

My question, as the thread title might suggest, is can you play fairly physical sports with braces?

I play hurling, and to a lesser degree, I box!

    Opinions please!

    Thanking you all in advance!

    :)

    Hi,
You can play sports while you're got braces on, but the problem is that you will not be able to use a custom-fit mouthguard while you've got them on, because your teeth will be moving all the time.

There are mouthguards available for use with braces, such as Shock Doctor Braces, but these are not recommended for heavy contact sports as they don't provide anywhere near the level of protection required. They are really only useful for preventing soft tissue injury and for protecting the teeth from relatively minor trauma such as being hit with a football or similar.

Hurling should be no problem if you wear a helmet with a facemask. Boxing, however, will be more of a problem as there is the potential for significant injury and a full-strength custom-made mouthguard would be mandatory (unless you can manage not to get hit in the face for 2 years!!)
