little bit obvious that this would happen given the very recent "deconstruction" of 2 prominent dongles.

im hoping soundtoys will give me decapitator for free now that a % of my money has gone down the drain.

out of curiosoty, i wonder what % of the cost of a plug goes to "ilok"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,790 ✭✭✭PaulBrewer

I was reading on GearEEjits a while ago where some eejit said he'd never use any plugins that used an iLok , because he didn't like iLoks.

I went around to his house and shot him in the face ....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,277 ✭✭✭DamagedTrax

    quite :)

doesnt answer my question though, what percentage is added to the price to cover the ilok licensing?

if these things are getting cracked left right and centre then paying users have a right to know.

and yes, before anyone jumps down my throat, i have in the past used cracks. and now im fully legit so i probably am being a little hypocrytical :P

No idea to be honest - and I've not thought of it before.
    I will ask though.

I suppose from a programmers point of view it's a part of the plug they don't have to write/invent - it's an off the shelf solution.

Sup dawg! We heard you like iLoks, so we put iLok in your iLok so that you can use your copy-protected software while you use your copy-protected software!

(the idea of iLok seems good, but I've heard horror stories about the implementation, so I'll stay clear too)

Sometimes I'm tempted to download cracks for some software I legally purchased.

Oh well. At least the "dongle" for Proteus X2 is more useful to me than the synth itself ;) (it's a nice-looking and usually reliable 2x2 USB MIDI interface, and it doesn't ask for installation CDs out of the blue)

As for price premium - I'm not worried about it that much (it's probably compensated by increase in sales), but any impact on stability, especially in live situations, is hardly acceptable.

What sort of issues ? Most people I know plug em in and that's it ...

Sort of unrelated but I have an iLok and haven't had any problems with it. I just got it for that Pod Farm giveaway a few months back. Does the job...

iLok here too, no problems. It's great actually, I can carry my favourite plugins to different studios.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILok#Criticisms

Not everything they write on the Internet is true, but if a simple USB MIDI driver like the one for Akai MPD16 can cause blue screens, then I can believe that a sophisticated, intentionally messy driver for a copy-protection device may cause them too.

The fact that it works for 99% of users doesn't make the remaining 1% any happier. :)

Have used an ilok for many years and have never encountered any issues.
Using it on PT on a Mac makes it much easier to travel with plugins. I cant think of a better method to protect software to be honest, it seems to be very secure.

kfoltmans link refers to PC wether that makes a difference.

I guess people who do not want to pay for software like to have their drama and go off on anti corporate rants.

Including commercial audio software developers? Don't think so. Have you actually read the links?

    Another link:

I actually like the idea of portability of licenses, because my primary machine is a desktop. However, computers are barely reliable even without adding more devices and more complicated, invasive kernel-level drivers. Not to mention the configurations where multiple dongles need to be used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,892 ✭✭✭madtheory

No, I didn't read the links, because as you say not everything on the web is true ;)

Yes, computers are not reliable, but neither were 24 track tape machines, unless you're an engineer. The key to reliability is knowing how to maintain the system, performing regular maintenance, and following manufacturer's instructions. Maintenance on Windows systems is a little more challenging that Apple, because there is a wider variety of hardware configurations, a broader user base, and viruses. iLok issues, in comparison, are quite far down the list. We have about 28 Macs at work now, and a similar number of PCs, each with one iLok containing multiple licences for each app and plugin. There's more trouble with XP instability and PC viruses than anything else. I think that's a reasonable survey sample, I don't need anecdotal evidence or un validated web references to feel OK with iLoks :)

I'm assuming that guys who wrote Audio Damage plugins should generally be capable of doing that.

I take you never had a job related to desktop software development, testing or support, am I right? The number of variables that can affect operation of any non-trivial desktop software is absolutely unbelievable, and that's just user-level stuff, not kernel-level. I wouldn't call any survey on less 100,000 users anything else than wishing from tea leaves (of course, I doubt there are 100,000 users of iLok, but who knows). ;-)

I am a big ilok fan.
I have lots of plugins authorized on it and have them installed on my mac pro, macbook and macbook pro. All I have to do is plug in the ilok and everything is there. I absolutely hate challenge/response authorization like ik uses.
On the downside if I ever lose my ilok I lose urs channel strip pro and saturator, waves ssl, autotune evo, PT 8 m powered, sonnox limiter,eq and inflator, Nomad factory bundle and line6 podfarm platinum.
Very scary so it stays on my car keys all the time. If I take a break during a session it comes with me too.
The only big problem with ilok is that I can't use logic's node facility with my laptops because I would need a second ilok with the plugins installed but then again it is very rare that my mac pro breaks a sweat unless working on a film mix with HD video.

I had a very quick look, evangelical anti iLok rant, and PC only. Seen it all before, yawn, proves nothing.

Not sure why you refer to the Audiodamage dudes, reliability is an issue for the user, not programmers, generally.

You're missing my point, I never said our computers are reliable, but that the unreliability is more manageable on the Macs than it is on the PCs ;). I have done software testing in the past, I know enough about it to not want to do it as a job! :)

Anyway, iLoks are grand, aren't they? If you're worried about loosing it there's insurance. Better than your HD dying and taking all your authorisations with it.

Is it possible to have a back up ilok with all your plug ins duplicated?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,790 ✭✭✭PaulBrewer

No , but they do offer a 'Zero Down Time' option.

How does that work Paul? Is there an extra charge for that option?

$30 a year for an Emergency 14 Day Licence.

    Thanks Paul,

    Not bad at all.

So the main advantage of the ILOK for the user is portability? An a bit of security?

That Audiodamage dude was one of the authors of these "evangelical rants", after experiencing a serious problem with Waves plugins and iLok. Surely he must be a pirate that can't maintain a computer properly! Or maybe not.

There is no rule that a person who is a developer of a certain set of plugins can't be a user of another group of plugins. In fact, I know of at least three examples. One of which is myself :-)

OK, that's clear, but who said anything about a rule? Waves are a little different from other vendors I think... their approach is very heavy handed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,790 ✭✭✭PaulBrewer

I just discovered you can 'fill' an iLok - I have 46 licences and can't add Waves Mercury, or any parts thereof, to the iLok.

ILok Number 2 here we come ...

Check this out. Also you cant delete a license from an ilok, which is really stupid. So you cant get rid of demo ilok licenses, which can use up your slots at a rapid rate if you check things out all the time. Even with all of this I have had no issues with it and it sure beats a challenge and response system.
