Football and The X Factor

About 20+ years ago I, and my peers, was huge into WWF wrestling. I was told that it was fake etc..and I wasn't having any of it. Of course I grew up and grew out of it...but it still exists today as an acknowledged "Fake" but an entertaining one nonetheless.

Let me give you some home truths about the X factor. It's a money making machine, but generally watched and enjoyed by people with fairly small imaginations. The very same people who love manufactured pop music and generally by whatever the TV will tell them to. Simon Cowell took an idea that was created by Nigel Lithgow and turned it into a licence to print money. All the players in this are merely actors, with the possible exception of the singers themselves, they're merely props.

Simon Cowell knows what creates ratings - at the top of that list is Controversy. Big Brother was huge for a while but then people got bored. The makers tried to spruce it up with all kinds of "controversial" things, but it was too late, the format had passed on. The X factor too will pass on, people will get bored of it...but to make sure that doesn't happen for a while yet, Mr Cowell will do whatever has to be done. The first thing he did this year was put John and Edward into the final 10 (or 12 or whatever many there is)...Those who think that it was just Lois who put them through are a little naiive. He could have put them out last night but he knew by doing so it would take a severe slice out of the ratings. You really believe that he didn't know what the voting tallies were last night?

It makes me laugh to see so many people get emotionally involved in it (including people who should know better), but, as my girlfriend shouted at me last night "Oh you can get emotionally involved in soccer but I can't get emotionally involved in this!?" - Course you can love...but as far as I know, football is not fake.

The makers of X-factor don't really care what happens to the winners, the last few are a testament to that. Every now and again a marketable winner will come along and they'll try and suck as much money out of him/her as possible before kicking them to the kerb and letting them survive on their own.

Simon Cowell looks at all the publicity and people like WB76 starting campaigns to get rid of the two boys and he'll rub his hands together in anticipation of another saturday night of record breaking figures. But, as my girlfriend decided to bring it up....maybe I'll finish with the football comparison.

This Saturday the two of them go head to head. X-factor - contrived, manipulated Soap Opera. VERSUS The World Cup play off between Ireland and France.

Before any girls that are reading this say that there's no competition, let me remind them of one thing...

Back in 1990 Ireland was in the middle of a Recession and then Italia 90 came along. Pennys was making a fortune selling world cup memorabelia, the bars and chippers and restaurants were hopping...and the country had a mountain of spontaneous sex, from which the Celtic Tiger was conceived. If Ireland qualify for the World Cup, then we can again look forward to a small, but timely economic boost. If John and Edward get through again this Saturday - Who the fcuk cares?!

Try The X Factor thread, OP. Or the TV forum.

I'm sick to my fucking back teeth from listening to people talk about X Factor or posting about it on Facebook. It's a panto for grown ups, nobody cares.
