Hi, thinking about doind medicinal chemistry in Trinity. Does anyone know anything about this career, what the actual job entails, what you earn, how sought after they are? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Well, off hand as a chemisty student... I'd say it'd have to do with studying the chemistry of diseases and development of drugs to counteract them. Alot like biochemistry, but focusing more on the chemistry side than the biological.

Cancer chemistry would be a major research area. One of the lecturers in Galway is a cancer chemist and he pulls in millions in research funding. Nice bit of pocket too since he's earning about 180 grand a year. Plenty of job opportunities in it.

If you like it, go for it.

I don't have much to add, Caroline, but I just wanted to say that I remember looking at that course and was very impressed by it. The only off-putting things were the cost of it and the fact that I wanted to leave Ireland anyway. Im studying for a PhD in physical chemistry in the UK, having a background in Biology and Computer Science at undergrad level.

Thanks for the replies, its an area I'm definately interested in. Kevster, when you say the cost put you off it, does it cost a considerable amount more than most courses?:o

Well, considering that it's TCD - yes - it does cost more than other courses. I am seriously doubtful whether it is actually a better course than in other places thuogh. The fees for it are around 5,500 (not including the silly 'registration' fee). You are referring to the undergrad course, right? I got the fee from here: http://www.tcd.ie/Treasurers_Office/fees/fees_coursefees.php

In some circumstances, you might be exempt from paying fees. For example, if you haven't been to college before, then you're entitled to four free years of undergraduate college from the Irish government, and if you're a mature student (over 23) and don't live with your parents, then you might be entitled too.
