Off to your local Sainsbury's to pick up your glasses folks, cos Channel 4 is going 3D for one week only. Well, for a few hours anyway.

Derren Brown, The Queen, 2 horror flicks (3 if you include the Miley Cyrus concert with that) and a clip show all with a glorious extra dimension.

Have to head to a 3D cinema and sneak a pair out (or buy some)

    Or make your own

    They probably wouldn't work.

I think this is the old red & blue lens from the 80's.

    Probably use quality street wrappers.

Nah a 3D cinema uses a different and much more advanced form of 3D projection so the glasses are completely different. I would imagine for the TV you would need the old school red and blue glasses.

Damn I had a pair when I had a life size 3D picture of Jet from the gladiators! Now to go back in time 12 years.

They used to come free in the RTE guide back in the 80s... problem was you only got one pair so you had to fight with the brothers to get a bit of 3d action.. unless you were friendly with the newsagent

IIRC the kind of 3D that used those glasses was bollocks.

A studio in Cork does the blue and amber ones, its on their site that they'l send you a pair, got this email work

I’m not sure if you heard but Channel 4 are doing 3d TV all next week BUT us down here in the republic cannot get hold of the free glasses they are giving away in Sainsbury's.

Some old ones won’t work either cos they have to be Blue and Amber, I emailed this bloke in Cork who runs a 3D imaging workshop, he is the only one in Ireland I know of, He also appeared on Dragons Den with his other inventions. He posted me a set of 3d glasses that will work , all I did was send my postal address to info@lenticular.ie, his name is Jon Mitton.

he emailed me his details (below) to pass on, thought it would be good to share with anyone else wanting to get in on the fun next week,

SO PASS IT ON TO ANYONE ELSE LOOKING FOR 3D IN THE LIVING ROOM

Nothing but a marketing gimmick this. Just like that 3D episode of Chuck. Maybe I had the wrong 3D glasses, but the show looked no different in 3D

Will the shows look fuzzy or anything without the 3d glasses like films do in the cinema?

They wont be as fuzzy as with the older cyan/red method

you will need dark blue / amber glasses , but I can't find anything online that says what exact colours/spectrum you need so can't say what sweet wapers you need,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Can you use the ones you get from the cinema?

    NO,

the cinema ones are usually polarised instead of being coloured

    I CAN'T FIND GLASSES!!!!

Can you not just go outside and look around? Everything's in 3D and you don't need coloured glasses.

Folks, dont bother, this is anaglyph technology, which is over 50 years old. Its just a gimmack and will ony give you a headache. It doesn't even work at all if your colour setting are not perfect on your tv.

The 3D that is in the cinema is a brand new and totally different working technology and cannot be compared at all to anaglyph 3d.

The classes needed for C4 crap 3D week are red & blue (cyan), while the glasses your get in the cinema are clear polarization glasses.

Its near impossible to get the Anaglph glasses in Ireland (by themselves)and you will be nothing but disappointed when you see the image.

I have a couple of filter swatch books here, has anyone found out which exact colours you need? Already made a couple of blue peter frames from a cornflakes box, just need to know what the proper colours are, anyone know?

The whole point of using DARK blue / amber instead of red/cyan is to reduce the headaches :p

and besides it's just a bit of fun

As the Captain says, it's a bit of fun. Some of the 3D effects on the Queen program were quite good, particularly the closeups, as were some of the card trick effects on the Darren Brown show. I have to say though, that the novelty wears off very quickly. I had no problem getting four pairs of blue/amber Channel 4 glasses on eBay last week. They're still to be found there.

Doesn't it devalue 3D? Especially as 3D Ready (full) TVs will be on sale? Funny? This is a serious matter :)
