I am looking at booking a flight to New Orleans next Summer flying Dublin to Toronto direct with Air Canada and connecting there.

1- Will I have to clear both US and Canadian customs in Toronto on the way over?

2- Will I have to clear Canadian customs on the way back again?

3- Will I have to get my passport stamped each of these times? (trying to save pages in it)

4 - Will my luggage be checked right through?

5- How long of a connection time should I leave?

Thanks guys, am hopeless with this stuff!!

Because it works out really cheap and you can't fly direct to New Orleans from here.

The usual route is through Atlanta with Delta, you're going a bit about the houses there to get to New Orleans through Toronto. And you won't be able to pre-clear customs in Ireland before you go.

Yes - you'll clear Canadian customs on the way in, and US immigration/customs at Toronto before boarding the connecting flight.
2- Will I have to clear Canadian customs on the way back again?

    Yes and possibly immigration
3- Will I have to get my passport stamped each of these times? (trying to save pages in it)

    On the inbound trips, definitely.
4 - Will my luggage be checked right through?
I'm pretty sure you have to pick it up and re-check it when you've done all the US stuff.
5- How long of a connection time should I leave?

Are you booking it all on one ticket? Or two seperate ones? If one ticket, around 2 -2.5 hours would probably be a good choice. Seperate tickets - anything up to 4 hours to make sure you have time to make your second flight and allow time for delays etc.

A good info site can be found here: http://www.airportwayfinder.com/wayfinders/yyz/?v=3_5

AirCanada is one of the few transatlantic carriers that do not charge $50 for a second bag
