has anyone ever thought about making a sgredder? i have a cousin who is handy enough at welding - he spent years making buckets and the likes for a big engineering firm. i was thinking of hiring out a shredder for a day to get a good feel for what it should look lik.e the only thing i am thinking is that the engine side of it could be a bit tricky. anyone else any thoughts?

I have heard of guys converting old precision chop silage harvesters to wood chippers alright, but a purpose built shredder is usually of a heavier construction than a silage harvester. The cutting cylinder, and all the associated shafts and bearings are usually of very strong construction and made of stronger wear resistant steel and there are safety features to shut the machine off in the event of someone getting dragged into it .

Vermeer do a neat range of shredders if you are looking for ideas. http://www.vermeer.com/vcom/EnvironmentalEquipment/Line.jsp?PrdlnID=3608
Be careful you dont shred yourself!

can you not pick up a proper one at an auction. there must be plenty of repossesed shredders about. that way you get waht you want at a reasnoble price.

i imagine that making one will not work out that much cheaper than buying a second hand one. ive looked at making a log splitter and by the time you factor in time youll buy a better one for the same money as making one.

The tricky thing about making a shredder is to get the chopper drum balanced. i imagine that it will be going at a fair pace so any imbalance will have it vibrating and shaking all over the yard.
