I was looking to get a PS3 for christmas and have been offered a 40GB model which I know has only been used about 3 times. I have heard however that they were very troublesome and have been known to 'blow up'. A sales guy in one of the big game retailers said that about 80% of this model actually packed up. Does any-one have any experience of this or is it a myth. Thanks in advance.

You were probably told that ,because the salesperson knows the 40Gb can't be bought anymore :(

Name and shame. What tard told you that? They're trying to up-sell you to another model or something. All the consoles are the exact same (save for the fat vs. slim obviously) bar a few tweaks here and there and the hdd. The rest (motherboard, memory, cpu, gpu, etc.) are the same...

I've had a 40GB for nearly 2 years with no problems.

Yeah you can upgrade the hard drive afterwards yourself if you want as PS3 uses standard hard drive so its a piece of p*** and cheap as chips to update the HDD>

well ive been through 2 40 gig models
first packed in with blu ray failure, was in warranty so sony replaced it straight away with another 40 gig, which i had for well over a year, but the fan started getting really loud and started pumping out some really hot air from inside the ps3, so i traded that in for a slim cos i knew it was on the way out also...

I bought my 40Gb second hand, so it was prolly 2-3 years old when I traded it in for a slim, never had a problem with it either.

I have a 40gb since Metal Gear Solid 4 came out. PS3 games eat up the free space though. If I had a choice now between a 40gb and an 80gb , id choose the 80gb.

It's was cheaper to get the 40G and just put in a 120G HD than buy the 80G when it came out first.
