    Hi all,

I've had a good read around here and all the info is making me go slightly cross-eyed :o

i've a samsung LE32R86BD with freeview built in and im trying to figure out what type of aerial i would need to receive DTT and or freeview, im located in Rush so have line of sight to wales would i be able to pick up any welsh transmitters ? would a wideband aerial do the job ?

what transmitter should i aim at for the Irish DTT three rock or cairn hill ?

    Thanks Guys

    Frank

Freeview (UK DTT) is broadcast on UHF frequencies so you need to go out in daylight and see if any of your neighbours have aerials pointing to NI or Wales, if they don't then it's unlikely that you will be able to get Freeview.

For the Irish DTT signal the answer is the same - what transmitter are your neighbours using to pickup RTE? The probable answer is Clermont Carn in Louth because although it's twice as far from you as Three Rock (64 v. 32 kms) , it's signal is 25 times more powerful (250 v. 10 kW) and you should have an unobstructed view of it across the sea just to the east of Clogher Head, Skerries is the only potential obstruction.

The Samsung LE32R86BD has only a mpeg2 decoder on board. Irish DTT need mepg4.

The absence of aerials pointing to wales in co Dublin doesn't mean that you wouldn't get a signal from there.

DTT in Wales and NW England is switching to higher power further reaching transmissions than analogue ever was.

I'd try Llandonna from there and certainly winter hill aswell.

Caldbeck [cumbria] is also a likely contender as it's being received well in co down.

Yes I'd try a cheap wideband first with a masthead amp-get the details of those transmitters.
    Lllandonna switches fully next week.
    Caldbeck is already fully live.
Caldbeck and Llandonna are your best bets.

Note that Llanddona, Arfon, Blaen-Plwyf and Preseli will all be HD enabled next year as has just been announced today.

thanks for the help guys, ive had a look round and spotted a few grid antennas and a huge yagi pointing to northern end of wales so im guessing these are pointing at Llanddona ?

most the aerials ive seen are grid type and pointing due north for the cairn hill i think, would a wideband aerial work with both these transmitters ?

can i join the feeds from two aerials into one cable ?

yes and yes however you may get cross channel interference

Try to get a wideband DTT aerial and a proception 16b amp with 12v power supply and you will need to mount this on your chimney stack so a lashing kit and pole may be necessary

The grids pointing north are for Kilkeel/Clermont from your location. That NI relay is analogue only till 2012. Aerials due east horizontal are probably for Llanddona which does beam in your direction as it covers NW Anglesey, vertical will be Arfon. They are all DTT from next Wednesday, Winter Hill is high power now on BBC's Ch 62 (100kW), and on Ch 59 from December 2nd. (ITVs, Four, Five etc) The HD channels on Ch 54 start on December 2nd but receivers for that are not available yet and the other WH channels are 58, 61 and 55 . Note that WH 54, 58, 61 are cochannel with Three Rock DTT allocations so they won't be receivable but the main BBC, ITV, Four and Five channels from WH are on clear channels. Another interesting possibility is the Port St Mary IOM repeater which has just been increased in power to 2kw yesterday: if you get a Cairn Hill signal it may be wiped out as its cochannel but its worth a try. I would ask the neighbours and those with the aerials!
