Cyclists 4 abreast? What's the rules?

Coming back to Dublin from Summerhill via Dunboyne this afternoon and there were 20 odd cyclists out for a cycle. Great day, no problems at all except they were cycling 3 and 4 abreast on country roads and wouldn't move in to let the traffic by..fair enough on a winding road but not where there's a straight....so, we're all doing about 30kmh or so for a few miles and the traffic is building up behind them. Eventually got past them and came across another group that went straight through a roundabout at Dunboyne without stopping and almost created a collision with a car already travelling on the roundabout...

I love the fresh air and always give way to cyclists seeing as I'm one myself but this was just an accident waiting to happen.

Just google'ing the rules as I wasn't sure myself and here's what the Do's are:

Do cycle in single file if cycling beside another person would endanger, inconvenience or block other traffic or pedestrians.
Do cycle in single file in heavy traffic.

    Any views?

    : )

Two abreast are allowed. However today you came across this:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055729833

The point is there were several hundred bikes on those roads today supporting a charitable event. With such numbers it is impossible to keep everyone two abreast (if this had been done the line would have been 2-3 times as as long as it was, making it even more frustrating for motorists), and most motorists showed appropriate patience.

All junctions were (very well) marshalled, and so I am surprised you came across a roundabout which was not

I agree...any big event I've come across are really well managed..this was just a casual event as far as i could make out...i.e. there wasn't more than maybe 20 odd in the group..

I was on that cycle today. Yes, some of the cycling was pretty embarassing. Sorry. I suppose at least it was for a good cause, and FWIW, I didn't see any twattish cycling from boardsies.

I don't think in that size bunch three or four abreast is necessary a problem, provided that it's well disciplined (a shorter bunch is easier to overtake), but six abreast with two over the white line round blind bends is not well disciplined.

I think the OP's question has been answered.
