    Hi Everyone,

I have been reading between the lines in many recent threads and always see the same message - negativity towards anything to do with Coillte land.
I've seen inudendo that is okay to poach Coillte land.
I've read that Coillte land is useless.
    I've read it is over-priced.
I've read it is all controlled by a small number of people.

I am not in this loop and am so curious about it.
Can someone please explain the negativity towards Coillte leases and land?
    Thanks.

AFAIK your turn your sport into a business by supporting these guys. There are better and more fulfilling ways of acquiring deer shooting permission. There are plenty of farmers out there that want shot of deer on their land.
Dublin mts are a hard nut to crack but if you can avoid the highly populated regions and the tourist traps you should have very little trouble finding some farmers to grant you permission.

Some of these chaps are happy just to have someone that calls in once or twice a year and tbh you playing a real part in the local community.

I call in to a good few each year and send them post cards when on holidays and at xmas and the better one get a xmas drink.
I actual like chatting with most of the old boys that have given me the nod and it good to talk!! but try not to let it take up to much of your shooting time;).

    Horses for courses here lads.

The way I see it is that you have to either see deer on farmers land or know of deer being on farmers land before you can ask the farmer.

BUT at the heart of this was to be able to go with someone who has stalking experience and can teach me the CORRECT techniques and ways.
I have only just started to hunt deer this season. Not knowing of any deer about or near to where I live I took the route of Coillte.
And yes I did take and pass the last HACP to full fill the Coillte requirements. But I'll still look for those FREE deer shoots and I will call in on farmers.

So I have 20,000+ Coillte acres to stalk and travel 120 miles - 2 1/2 hours to get to the land in Kerry.

So far two visits and two doe calfs, another yesterday.

I was under the impression that Sika and Red deer are Stags, Hinds and Fawns
    Fallow Buck, Doe and Calf.
I think the Coillte leases are a racket, you are basically paying Coillte to do their work! That said if you know no-one and still want to shoot Deer than it is another option.
I would still try and get in with a few knowledgeable stalkers even if you are just helping with the drag for a while you should still learn some stalking skills, assuming they are reasonable hunters.

    Thanks for the responses.
I am not looking for stalking; I was just looking for an understanding on the negativity about Coillte leases.
You may appreciate that hunting / stalking can seem like a closed group to an outsider.
I am very interested in deer and everything that goes with it, including stalking, culling, hunting and commercial shooting, an opinion on whether I agree with all aspects is irrelevant as I don't do it myself.
In order for me to fully understand the game, I would like more insight into the general opinion of why Coillte leases are a racket.
Is it just about paying to shoot?
    Are the lease prices high?
    Are they too high?
Is there a monopoly on the Coillte stuff and in your heart of hearts are you jealous or aggravated by that?

I can certainly agree that shooting for the farmer and adding to the local community is very admirable, but in some circumstances for some people is that a real option?

Is the local farmers land sown up as-well by monopolies or the usual provincial Irish behaviour?

No agenda here lads, I love country sports and everything that goes along with it, just feeling a bit clueless about the politics that is seeming to go along with it.

personally,I would have no problem paying for a shoot.IF I was getting value for money. And Coilte played by it's own rules and were not putting stupid objections or conditions on you trying to do your part of the work.
    Are the lease prices high?
IMHO for whats on offer around here ..yes.

Why would you be jealous of somthing state run when you can get somthing for free???Deer dont recognise private or Coilte land.So your chance of shooting a good deer is 50/50 on either types of ground.

There is more farmland than Coilte state forest in Ireland, and unless you dont want to drive miles to go shooting, maybe.I knew one lad who lived in Dublin and had a shoot down in limerick area.Dont know why he botherd...I looked once at taking the lease, and it was the most poached and barren small leasein the area.Just asking the farmers would have got me a better shoot.

Depends on the area. Some places yes,no ,maybe. By and large no.
