Hi folks, im going to take up road running over the next few days and was looking for some advice, i ve been cycling for years and ran cross country for some time before that, regarding distance, what would be a suitable distance to begin with?, i know everyone is different but generally what would be the norm? i was planning to run in one direction for 15 mins and then come back again to my start point, to get me going for first week or so, any advice would be welcome. also are they any particular runners recommended for the road, i have a good pair of pumas, which i think are ok but wont know till i start hitting the tarmac.

15 minutes each way is a good starting strategy. Why don't you start with a 5k program, and figure out where you want to go from there? Not sure of your level, but you could try one of HalHigdon's 5k programs. A bit of structure can progress you in a manner that helps avoid injury, and provides some variety.

Oh, nearly forgot. To try and answer the running shoe question: Most running shoes are good for around 500-600 miles, so if you think you have done more than that in your Pumas, then they need replacing. There is no such thing as a good running shoe (for all people), there is only the most suitable running shoe for you. the best thing to do is make your way to a specialized running shop, and get a gait analysis performed. Then try on various running shoes as advised by the running shoe shop, and select the most comfortable/appropriate shoe.

Running in ill-fitting or inappropriate shoes can lead to injury (and expensive physio treatment!).
