    Hi all,

Has anybody got any thoughts on these?

I am thinking of getting a 2 litre with auto box for 5k.

Is there better autos for that money?

    thanks

    RG

Normally i'd agree, but from memory the Maxima has a 2.0 V6 giving 170ish bhp. Granted i'd still want the 3.0 myself, but the 2.0 should satisfy most people.

+1. Big comfy cruiser, and that 2.0 ltr V6 is a lovely engine.

    Thanks Guys,

would you choose one over a SAAB 9-5 or Volvo S80?

At €5k I think more depends on the actual car than the make/model. That said, i'd have the SAAB or the Nissan over the Volvo.

Take your time, good cars are cheap these days. Don't even bother looking at anything without a FULL documented service history, and ring the garage(s) concerned to verify.

Fine car, fine engine. Plenty of power and very quite.

My aul fellas choice of wheels :)

Only cavat, it will only return 30+ mpg if your cruising, anywhere else 24-28mpg

Absolutely. has to be auto with leather though. they never break down. you can excuse electrical maladies on a 20k car under warranty, but on a €5k car, any repairs can cost a huge chunk of the cars value.

I'd have no problem recommending a Maxima, I was doing a search for similar and found this instead:

Great cars, a little bland, but very smooth, well equipped and fantastic reliability. Dont pay near asking price though.

Nice car, heavy on petrol though.

30mpg combined isn't bad for a big saloon.

Yep, go for it. I've got a '00 (new model) with 95k miles on it that I picked up for less than four grand this summer. They're a great car, I'm sure you'll like it if you get one. :)

    Here's a couple of pointers:
1.) Don't bother with a base spec car, fully-loaded examples (with leather, cruise, heated power seats, etc.) aren't worth much more.

2.)Avoid the 3 litre engine. You'll pay more than the car is worth in tax and fuel before too long.

3.)Warped brake discs are quite common, check for a pulsating motion when you brake.

4.) Check it idles properly. Idle control units are expensive, and if it idles at 1500 r.p.m., you've got trouble.

5.) Finally, be warned: The one thing I don't like about mine (well, two if you count that stupid Star Trek instrument cluster) is the truly monumental turning circle. If you were driving a Maxima in Luxembourg, you wouldn't be able to do a U-turn without crossing into Germany.

I drive a '98 jap spec maxima (cefiro). The vq20 has been in the ward's best engine top 10 for years.
Timing chain tensioners can give trouble, and I failed my first NCT on emissions and suspension components.
Higher mileage ones benefit from regular oil changes with a nice semi-synthetic.
I drove a newer, lower mileage 2.5 v6 Cougar on hols recently and couldn't wait to get back to my "Japanese Jaguar".
No probs with turning circle but they understeer like a mofo, it's a bit of fun the first time you push it until the front starts to let go.
Auto was great in snow and ice last winter and it's nice to play with the power button and overdrive.
