How long after first receiving job seekers allowance can I start receiving the back to education allowance? I have already been accepted into a college course but I needed to defer for a year to get the fees together. In this circumstance am I even eligible?

    Hi thelastangryman

You need to be on Jobseeker's Allowance (or another qualifying payment) for either 9 months or 12 months to get the Back to Education Allowance for third level.

It is 12 months normally, or 9 months if you are approved by a DSFA jobs facilitator or by FAS under the National Employment Action Plan.

The course also has to recognised, for example, by the Department of Education and Science for the Higher Education Grant Scheme.

You can find out more about the BtEA here: http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/bte_all.aspx
