New Tyres for Roadbike

Hi folks - just looking for any pointers on new tyres for my roadbike. I do around 100kms+ every Saturday in the Wickla hills. I have a Kiron Scandium roadbike, which came with Eason EA50 wheels & Pariba Revolution tyres.

Gotta replace front & back tyres so would appreciate any suggestions. Am thinking of heading to CycleSuperstore tomorrow to make my purchase.

Was up over the Sally Gap today when I got a puncture & when I went to change the tube, I noticed the tyre had split completely! A few kms on & still in the mountains (freezing today!) 2nd tube went pop, as it was more or less doing the job of the tyre.

Changed tube again & just about made it home (by staying off my saddle for the last 40kms) when final tube went in the Phoenix Park (only 1km from home).

Lesson learnt - I should've checked my tyres before heading out this morn as I could've got stranded altogether. BTW - 2nd Question ...... whats anyone's backup plan if they have an irreparable breakdown on the road? Call a friend to ask for a lift? Any cab companies take a cyclist (lycra & all) and bike?

Slightly off topic, sorry. But whats your route from The Park out to Wicklow?

I assume most people stash €20~50 somewhere and carry a phone? I don't do those distances, but I'd just ring someone if it were me.

Different routes, but most often I head up to the mountains via Stocking Lane - then depending on the day I might head Sally, Wicklow gaps, Blessington & home OR head to Luggala & on from there.

Always bring a few quid & phone - but my missus was abroad today & was thinking after my "incident" - if taxis would take the bike? Just had never really thought about it before & thought at one stage that I defo would be stranded.

Was fairly freezing when I'd stopped to change the punctures

pretty much most people bring cash + cc + phone on rides. if you have a tyre gash there are boot temperory measures that can get you home...a full split, i guess you could bring a folding tyre, though its mostly touring people i think who might bring something like that?

mostly i'd just ring someone if i could, otherwise i guess taxi it...

If you get a split on the back tyre the best thing to do is first change it to the front wheel. That way the weight will be less and you can sit down.
Secondly carry a piece of milk carton or a small piece of rubber also patch the inside of the tyre with a puncture repair patch.
A phone and emergency money are essential pieces of kit especially if on your own.

Right back to job at hand, tyres!!

I use michelin krylion carbon in the winter, hard wearing, have mine a couple of years, they are fantastic. will go forever.

Summer, continental gp4000s, love em. really didn't realise tyres made such a diff till i tried these.

Freddy - switching the tyres makes sense. Thanks for that. I never carry a puncture patch, as I thought 2 tubes was enough, but a patch would've been useful today. Always have my phone & would never think twice about ringing my missus to pick me up in an emergency, but when shes away, I wouldn't wanna assume a mate would be free to pick me up. Do taxis take bikes?

Cosman - never thought about getting two sets (but am always looking for a practical excuse for making a few extra purchases!). Nice one!

On the winter bike:- Continental Ultra Gator Skins
On the "best" bike:- Vittoria Diamante Pro

    No complaints about either set.

Once rode home on a flat as my virtually unused pump broke in two when needed. It was only a couple of miles but I'd have been late for work if I'd walked, thankfully, the wheel rim survived. Otherwise, I've never experienced an irreparable breakdown. As regards tyres wearing, following a ride I'd put the bike in the shed, walking towards the house I thought I was being shot at, the tube exploded through a tiny hole in the tyre, I was obviously very lucky that day. In the old days didn't puncture outfits come with a piece of material to use as a tyre repair?

think i seen you last week on the sally gap ,is your bike black and white .

if your ever stuck and see a black landrover discovery 03 D .up there its me .

Thanks Lescol for the recommendations. I will check with CSS. The Easton 50s wheels are a nightmare to try to find tyres to fit, so the more suggestions the better.

jwshooter - a guy in a landrover pulled up beside myself & my mate today when I was changing tubes - to see if all was OK. At that stage I hadn't noticed the tyre tear, & if I did I may have taken the lift!! Thanks if that was you. My bike was on the ground & it was black & red.

I assume a taxi would cost a small fortune. Ring a friend would be best.

I actually meant between the park and rathfarnham?

Ah - I head over from Cabra, thru the park & meet up with a couple of pals in Chapelizod, then through Ballyfermot, Walkinstown, Firhouse, Stocking Lane & up up up from ther
