Im tring to figure out a way of taking the sound from my PC/Laptop which would be playing music, and then taking the sound from my elec guitar and combining them in some way so that when I put on a set of earphones I can hear them both and jam away over tunes dusturbing no one but myself, but the sound isnt being heard outside the room!

What would I need to get this setup?

An audio interface and some software!

I use an Alesis iO14 and GarageBand, but there are millions of combinations that could sort you out.

Some practice amps allow a line in and have a head phone jack.

So basically a mixer, whats the difference? thanks.

Not exactly, it's a little more complicated than just a mixer.... An audio interface has inputs, outputs, preamps for the inputs, but also an analogue/digital converter and USB/Firewire output. So you plug it into your computer, and use the computer to control what's going in and out of the interface. Usually used for recording or signal processing and things like that.

If you wanted to simplify things, you could get a practise amp like BostonB said, or use a regular mixer.

As El Pr0n says, there are loads of ways of doing this.

I use my guitar plugged into a PodXT Live which is connected via USB to a laptop. I stick a set of headphones into the appropriate socket on the laptop and I'm all set.

Might seem like a daft question but what headphones do ye use?

    I do the same myself.

Id recommend a line 6 pod studio. Great piece of gear and relitivly cheap. Plus you got all the tones of the pod to muck around with.

A small practice amp with an aux in would seam the simplest way to go about it. Plug your MP3 players or laptop or whatever into the Aux In on the amp and then plug in the head phones.

I use some model of Sennheiser headphones. I don't have them with me right now to check the exact model. I'll update later.

I think it's a better solution than buying a whole other amp just for practicing. I am of course assuming that the OP already owns an amp. It's not clear from their post whether they do or not.

Vox Amplug. It has a headphone in on it. You just hook up the phones out on your computer to it and away you go.

    Tascam MPGT1.

I use the MPBT1 which is the bass version, it's great! Load it up with some mp3's and plug in your instrument and headphones and jam away.
