I am rebuilding my computer and will have two hdds. I am using the original SATA drive with xp pro on it. The new hdd I want to put win7 pro on it. I downloaded the win7 retail program for custom installs and burned it to a dvd. My question is this once I restart my computer and get the video and sound cards working etc I will restart my computer with the dvd in the dvd drive. Should the computer see this during boot up and then I can install? Not sure.

    Thanks!

enter the bios and set the dvd/cd drive as the first boot device.(carefully)

mp22- So when I want to install win7 on the second hdd, I go in and set the bios to read the dvd first instead of the hdd. Save the change, restart the computer and it should read the dvd first, and boot from here. Obviously, when win7 is up and running I can go back to the bios and reset the boot order. Is that correct?

    That's correct.

Don't forget that if you remove HDD 1 you will NOT be able to start the computer up on HDD 2 alone.

Windows 7 will install the boot stuff to HDD 1 and the other 99.99% of the operating system will be on HDD 2

Not really a problem, just something to be aware of.

If you want to have one os per hard drive remove the hard drive with xp on and then install windows 7.
