In September I handed in my notice for my previous employer to move onto bigger and better things.

I was a store manager in a retail store

I was held to my months notice before I could leave.
On my last day my area manager came down and thanked me for all the hard work I had done over the past 18 months.

    BUT

Today I got a call from some of my friends ex staff members they said to me that the CAO of the company had said to a staff member (and god knows who else) that I was fired from my position for whatever reason. And its now spreadding through the company.

Im wondering is this slander and can I take it further or am I just being a moany fecker?
Im really just so put out by it?

It is slander and it is actionable. The difficulty will be establishing that the statement was made.
If one (or more ideally) of the people to whom the statement was made are willing to stand up in court and say so then you should go to a solicitor.
You should talk to a solicitor before contacting your former employer.

Id was in a formal meeting with a part time employee when said originally and then it has then been spread from him to other staff members.

and who knows who else up in head office.

Ok - Go talk to a solicitor please. There is an angle here but it may mean having someone either swear up to that or testify. Legal advice is not available here. You need to engage a solicitor.
