Surely class lists should be used exclusively for informing people of relevant topics, not pushing owns own agenda? Especially as the email might gain some form of legitimacy by being sent by a dcu staff member.

I really don't think this is on at all. Surely this type of thing shouldn't be allowed?

    Dear All,

Please find forwarded an email which may be of interest to you.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

    Tina,

Could you circulate this to all colleagues and students of Law and Government,
    please?

    Barry

    Dear colleagues,

This message is to encourage people to attend the march in Parnell Square
at 2.30pm, this Fri 6th, protesting the government's economic policies with
particular regard to the public service.

"The course of action proposed by Government is both unworkable and
    unfair. </news/2009/10/26/there-is-a-better-way-david-begg/> To cut
peoples' incomes in a recession invites economic freefall and to impose
the greatest burden on low and middle income earners is unjust. They
played no role in causing this crisis and should not be presented with
    the bill". David Begg, ICTU.

If you're coming along let me know and we'll arrange a meeting point so we
    can march together.

    Barry

I got it too, wasn't impressed. Plus who's Barry? Why would I want to march with him because he's in DCU? Plus surely anyone who's in the school of law and govt. would know about this march and wouldn't need an email to be informed

There was a bloke who used our class alumni email addressed for recruitment there a couple of years. I got so p***ed with him, I ratted him out. Emails stopped.

It's called unsolicited email or spam. I don't think it's just FF sympathizers that don't like spam.

I think it was badly worded. Had the e-mail just been to inform interested students that there was a meeting point for anyone going along to the march then it wouldn't have looked so bad.

That said, any student in the school of law and government that attaches legitimacy to an e-mail just because it comes from a staff member of a university should possibly reconsider what they're studying. Universities are about being exposed to different ideologies and different theories and figuring out where you belong. They're not about spending 3/4 years there and coming out with no idea of how to critically analyse the world because they've been exposed to nothing but bland middle ground.

It's not on at all, your class distribution list shouldn't be used for anything not directly relevant to college stuff, should it?

This reminds me of a few (or it could be nearly ten - I'm quite old :() years ago, the son of a senior staff member at Letterkenny IT was somehow given access to the contact details of all students. He used them to promote a nightclub venture I think?

Heck, I got an email over the official DIT webmail from one of my lecturers (also a head of department) encouraging attendance of the very same march.

Since he'd be on all sorts of committees I suppose its A-OK in DIT and I can't imagine there's a huge difference out in DCU.

In short, I say ignore it, OP.

yeah thats bull**** OP. complain to the SU or something(if your bothered) if thats the sort of thing they deal with! I always resent getting emails from the inter faith center. I fail to see why there should be any religious center on a campus (dont care if it caters for all faiths or not) (probably my registration fee is paying for it, if someone knows if thats how its funded or not i wouldnt mind knowing;)) and if it really must be there why does everybody get sent these emails such as
(Apologies to those for whom this is of no interest.)

    International Week – Prayer Gathering
    “Celebrating the DCU Family”
    Inter Faith Centre
    Thursday 29th Oct 09 from 2 – 2.30pm
I not sure we should be getting these emails, also gym/restaurant opening hours emails, seeing as these are private companies!
shouldnt the content of these emails just be on our portal pages!
