Any idea where one should go to get a good deal on twelve laptops.

Rough spec 3GB with a decent processor running Windows7, big memory not essential,(student laptops, memory will never be utilised fully). 15.6" screen or bigger, will be plugged in pretty much permanently so decent battery not essential.

WEb cam, WiFi etc. Need to be reasonably fast machine.

Had a look already, was just wondering if anyone had come across any good deals that might loosly fit our criteria.

Saw a couple of Acers but not sure about the E-machines thing, were they always the one company or whats the jack. Bad experience in the past with E-machines.

Messaged Dell today about getting a discount on 12 units of a particular model that was retailing online at 429 inc delivery. Bulk price online divided by 12 came to 467 which didnt represent great value as i was expecting a reduction in the delivery charge at the very least.

She couldnt answer my query so went about checking it out, disconnected me and now i'm none the wiser. Not great customer service as she made no further attempt to contact me via email or phone. In any event she said they could not give any reduction on base price of machines as they are discounted to the nut.

    Tomorrows another day.

Call Stephen Desay in Business Management Systems in Dublin. They are main Toshiba agents and he is a good guy.

Dell are crap in my opinion so you may aswell get 12 good machines. I have had several toshibas and got them all from him with 110% reliability.

I've ordered bulk in a place I used to work from Dell. Always ring. You will get a far better deal ringing them up.

As for the previous reply never mind it. Dell are not crap contrary to the popular belief of the uninformed. That being said Toshibas are not bad either.

Either that or get on to a HP reseller. You should get a good deal and HP laptops are very reliable.

Excuse me. How do you know I'm 'uninformed'? I have been working in I.T for years and on each occasion I have had to deal with a dell I have had major problems. Ordering, repair, after sales.. the list goes on.

Whilst I accept others may have good experiences, I think your reply is a little arrogent and misinformed.

It's not intended to be arrogant. And also that 'uninformed' was not really directed at you. I'm just fed up of people saying Dell are crap which they aren't and I am in no way associated with them. I've always had good experiences with them. From my experience there are a lot more people happy with them than unhappy.

Well I'm glad that you have had a good experience. But unfortunatly I just do not have anything good to say about them. I have ordered from them and been let down, waiting months to receive my order, friends have done the same, and anyone I've spoken to generally agree with my opinion. But I do accept that there are alot of Dell success stories around, just not in my area!

If you want to buy Irish and have some some local support then go with BMS who probably by trade from Microwarehouse

Toshiba Business Laptops ( Sat pro ) range will outlast the dells by far as the dell casing warps , batteries fail on day 366 ect etc, Toshiba have a good UK based support line

Toshiba have also put alot of thought into their restore disks ,as regards Windows XP setup and Vista Business from waht I have seen

If you know what you want in Toshibas and are not concerned about buying irish then try

www.laptopsdirect.ie or www.laptopsdirect.co.uk , .co.uk can be cheaper sometimes depending on sterling rate and if you have a VAT number they will ship ex VAT to yo which is good for cashflow

Agree with that. BMS have a warehouse/shop in Walkinstown in Dublin where you can easily call in to collect. They should happily do a bulk deal for you. As regards warrenty, you just drop the machine into them and they will fix. Couldnt be simpler.

As for the Toshiba restore discs, WOW, they are super. One disc. 20-30 minutes, job done. Laptop completely reinstalled with a new o/s, all drivers etc. No messing with 5-6 discs like a dell.

But as has been mentioned above, with a nice big number like 12, definatly pick up the phone, thats always the best way to do a deal.

I have limited experience with Toshibas. Do they come with a system restore partition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

    re Toshibas restore

eg on the Vista Business models

Ships with Vista and XP option , you complete the setup with username etc etc and then make 2 restore DVDs yourself link on the desktop

if you want XP , you boot from the supplied XP restore disk ( they update frequently to include latest service packs) wipe the partition automatically and you are left with XP , no licence keys or rubbish to type in for either

Untrue - You can restore all current Dell laptops to the factory default without using any disks - the operating system + necessary drivers are located on a seperate hd partition. Very simple to do.
In the case where you need to replace the hard drive, you will need 2 disks - Windows Operating system disk and Dell Drivers disk.

I agree though that Toshiba are a very good machine and if you get a better deal on the Toshiba, I would go with them.

I've also found that the Dell build quality is not as good as it used to be.
I've bought 6 Dell laptops, 1 HP, and 2 Toshiba laptops since Jan 2008.
Perhaps it's just really bad luck on my behalf, but 5 of the 6 Dell's had to be repaired - one 4 times, three 2 times, and one a single time - all were h/w related issues. While I found their after-sales service excellent, that is way too many failures to happen inside 20 mts.
Both the HP & Toshibas are still working fine, and I've found the battery slightly better on the Toshiba.

I stand corrected. Any if the Dell machines I have worked on recently werent new machines (IE 2 years or older) and you need multiple discs to do a restore. OS, drivers 1, drivers 2, extra dell bundle software etc.

But at the end of the day, you cant beat Toshiba's 1 cd. The Hard drive restore partition is ok, but if your hard drive melts your in bother!

Can deffo back you up on all of this as being 110% accurate. So handy that Toshiba allow you to downgrade to XP so easily. However, they have less and less machines available with this option recently.

Most Dells and HP machines come with separaet system retore partition which will retore the machine to factory defaults with drivers installed. Very handy and easy to use. However if the hard drive is buckled there isn't a lot you can do. Restore cd's come in handy in that instance.
