transit timing belt + doe

    hi,im wondering if anyone no's for definite what the milage is for an old type transit timing belt change?
    have searched around but it seems to range from 30k to 100k :confused:
    also if a doe is out for say 6 months when you buy it does that mean like the nct that when you get a doe on a van it will be back dated to when it was last done?????
    hope someone can help for definite :)

    If your on about the old 2.5 transit the timing belt interval is 50k miles.

    The DOE is not like the NCT it lasts 1 year from the date of test.

    yea i no it's only for a year,thing is the van im looking at is out 5 months so if i buy it and doe it does that mean i only get 6 months doe or is it from when i bought it??
    remeber a car i bought that when i got it the nct was out 1 year and 3 months nct'd it but it was back dated.

    DOE isn't backdated. If you're looking to buy a transit, I'd go for the newer model 01 onwards (some newer 00's too). This particular model doesn't have a timing belt, but a chain which doesn't really need to be replaced as far as I'm aware.

    was told this but was also told of a lot of electric problems with the newer shaped one,thanks for the help

    Only electric problems I've had so far have been a bit of corrosion on the back bulb holder. Little spray of contact cleaner fixed that though. In terms of driving, the new model is far better. I had far more troubles with my old model transit than I've had with my new model one. I think anyone here will vouch for that too the amount of threads I've started on the old one :p

    The old Transit is a far better van than the new one if you can get a good one.

    I know they have a reputation for being "driven into the ground" but I much prefer the new model. Much more responsive to drive and far more comfortable, better top speed and much much better on hills. I've had no major issues with mine at all.

    comfort in driveing or dependability,have had the older ones before and never let me down but was uncomfortable and slow with any sort of load,seen a few but theres something wrong with them all,very hard to find a decent one.

    The old ones are out of production for nearly ten years so you will have a job getting a good one after all they are work horses.

    Maybe try and get a telecom one they may have high milage but they would be well looked after or maybe one from England.

    Ah right, well my own experience is of a 99 old type vs a 02 new type (bought with 70K miles on the clock). Bought the 99 for about 3K, spent 1.8K in the 3 months on repairs that just came about after I bought it. Have been driving the 02 since June 07 and it's had a few little problems but nothing major thankfully. Infact most of the problems I've had are just pipes going from wear and tear and then flat tyres, a viscous fan and that's about it as far as I can remember. Repair costs for the new model have definitely been less than what I spent on the old one I'd say anyway and that's with 30 months driving as opposed to 3.

    My mechanic who specialises in transits says they do have parts known to go on them, but they are mostly cheap to replace and fit.

    From a driving point, the new model is just far far nicer to drive. You'll be sitting in the driving lane of the M1 going 70/80kmph up some of the inclines watching new transits fly past. I remember sitting in mine just clenching the wheel and thinking one day... one day!

    finding it very hard to find a decent van,old or new type,have seen an 01 with 180k on her,clean van but high mileage imo,what do you think about that sort of mileage?
    im thinking that it's a bit dear at 2k and would find it hard to sell on once it goes past 200k?
    what youre opinions on it?

    ive heard that front wheel drive one's give trouble is this true??

    I wouldn't be too sure about such high mileage, it really depends on how it was driven and what was driven in it too. You'd just need to go and have a look at it I guess. There's loads of them up on Ebay if you were up for a trip to the UK? You could get a far better one than you'd find here for the same price and the VRT is only €50 on a van that size. I wouldn't skimp on the purchase price of the van though as this could lead to add up to far more in repairs etc than what you'd pay for a much better one.

    they backdate the doe now came in july 2013
