Speaking in hypotheticals here but would you pay a subscription to use google of say €2/month? Or would you just feck off and use Bing?

I'd be inclined to say I would, sure it has the answer to almost any question, and Its a service I use almost every time I go online.

Would you pay to use Google search? 18 votes

    lol no

Google makes billions per year on the backs of millions of users.. I don't know the exact figures but it's safe to say that they make at least 10 euro (on average) for each person that uses the service per year, which is more than enough

It is useful, but I don't think I'd be interested in paying. I can't see them ever bringing that in.

No I wouldn't. Google have ALOT of revenue streams and I do like the company as a whole, which is strange given I generally don't like such big companies, but if they started a subscribtion service I would just use a different search.

Besides, if they did, within 3 weeks there would either be a way around it, or a new search engine extension for Firefox which works better than google.

If they included access to all their services I probably would. Assuming they're not still making a fortune everywhere else.

No way - Wikipedia tells me everything I need to know. If there's something Wikipedia can't teach me....well, I don't want to know what that something is.

There were search engines before google, if it up and ceased to exist tomorrow there would still be search engines.

I already pay for google. I run ads on google daily. How else do you think you're using the site for free? It's supported by ads and other revenue streams.

You pay for advertising not for search. If you had an ad on the radio, would you go around saying you pay for your radio listening?

I was making a point. Yes I'm not directly paying for the search. Uhh... nevermind.

    Would I pay ?

Gladly - it is a fantastic service

Some people are too hung up on how profitable Google are .. and then resent the profits they make. ME, I just think it is a fantastic company with a fantastic product. €2 per month ?? Of course , I'd pay that. A bar of chocolate costs almost €1

I'd rather have a two bars of chocolate each month.

    I wouldn't pay.....but I wouldn't use Microsoft's search either.

Google was VERY good, but then they started messing around a little with it, showing sponsored links above the real ones (they were ok on the right-hand side) and now the illogical and unfair map results, which have no association with an actual site's content or ranking.

For a search to work to the user's benefit, you need to have it based on content and relevance, and not for the advertiser's benefit based on who pays the most.....it's a slippery slope if the results are biased to minimise, or worse still exclude, sites that don't cough up.

Yahoo and a few others are still around, so we'll survive if this ever does happen.

    I doubt it will, though.....

    I'd ask Jeeves.

I have a biased opinion but I think everyone should pay for Google.

    Do it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

No. Any service that is free and then decides to charge I would not use.
If I came to boards and they were charging for what once was a free service I would not use it anyone.
I subscribe to boards though because its given me so much. But if it was manditority I would be gone.

Indeed. Most websites have a section that says ads by google.

A good 30% of my Gmail inbox is ads.

They are making a lot of money so they do not need to charge for using the search engine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,185 ✭✭✭asdasd

I havent read all the discussion, but the OP did say hypothethical.

Of course I would if that kind of model had become standard for internet searches.

That is if they couldnt have made money from advertisting, and all major search engines had some kind of micro payment ( 0.1C per search) or subscription model ( unlimited per year) I would pay, just as I pay my electricity. If there were no equivalent free options thats what I would do. So would we all. Once, however, we get used to "Free" we think it is normal.

10E a year is nothing, but the internet is useless without a useful search engine.

    So I voted yes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭omahaid

I remember the internet before google (and yahoo at the time was ****e). It consisted of typing in www.what_ever_you_are_looking_for.com. Although 90% of the time this actually worked. So, no, I wouldnt pay, I would revert to typing in www.what_I_am_looking_for.com
