Apple support on iPhone

I bought an iPhone 3Gs 16Gb 3 weeks ago, last week I was in the USA when the wifi mysteriously stopped working on it. It told me to plug the phone into iTunes which is exactly what I did when I got home. But the wifi is completely grayed out. I called apple for support on how to fix the issue, and they were very helpful and told me they'd send out a courier to collect the phone, repair and return it. Next day, the courier arrives, the following day it arrived at the repair centre and yesterday it arrived back to me. I was delighted with the speedy service, until I open the box to find inside that they didn't repair the phone because one or more of the liquid indicators were on indicating that liquid had entered the phone deeming my warrenty void.

Fair enough, if that was true, but the thing is, I deliberately checked the liquid indicators, before I sent it, because I'd read scams by repair shops to deem the warrenty void if they activate the liquid indicators and say it was "liquid damage", hence saving them a fortune in replacement and repair costs. I rang apple to complain, because I had checked the indicators, and it was obviously not of my doing. I'm fuming, since it's only 3 weeks old this phone, and I've looked after it with my life, not letting anything near to it. They're to call back on Monday, but basically telling me I've to pay €140 for the repair, which in no way can I afford, I saved for months to buy this phone.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

The liquid indicator is a b*stard of a get-out clause for the phone companies/retailers. Even though your phone may have been used carefully since you bought it, anything from a few drops of rain on it to using it on a foggy morning can cause the sensor to indicate liquid damage, despite the phone still working.

TBH it's completely unacceptable. I'm not completely sure what you can do, but if you bought it in Ireland you go all the way to the small claims court. Did you get photographic proof of the "liquid damage"?

First, search around google, if it's a software problem, someone somewhere has had the same issue and there is probably information about it. Second, do a search on boards for "water damage"/liquid damage, particularly in the Consumer Issues forum. A lot of people have this problem.

In fact, this might get more replies in the consumer issues forum.
