VRT Inspections

Anyone got any experience of getting a car VRT'd recently?

Do they actually inspect the car?
Will the print out that you can get from the web on the VRT calculation, be the actual price?
What about extras on the car effecting VRT etc, you can't specify them on the web thingy?
I guess above could depend if the VRT payment was €500 or €20,000?
Can you just turn up or do you have to book?
Do you have to show an Invoice for the car, if so maybe something from dealer that doesn't list extras etc?
If the date of 1st registration and when you buy it from the dealer is less than 6mths, is VAT @ 21.5% applied?
Where on Southside, close to Tallaght VRT office could I get plates fitted (couldn't be bothered fitting myself) and do you have to 'order' the plates, or will they do up while you wait?

    Thanks

They normally only inspect high end stuff like BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes.

I know somebody who imported a 09 Volvo S40 and the VRO went out to it with a checklist. They were ticking boxes for things like leather seats, alloy wheels, etc. She even counted the number of spokes on the alloy wheels . They also wanted the purchase invoice from the garage incase there was VAT owning on it. The car was 8 months old with 12k km on the clock.

After all that they then took down the chassis number and got back to him about a week later with the VRT price which was slightly less than the quote on the VRT website.

I would imagine it depends on who you get, their mood and probably how new the car is. For most premium brands they can access a database using the car's chassis number for any factory fitted extras.

You really can't be bothered drilling in 2 screws for each plate......wow.

The VRO don't fit number plates, once the VRT is paid they will issue you a registration number. You can then go to a motor factors and get the registration plates made up.

im sure there is a halfords close that can do it for you. you have 3 days to fit the irish plates. i went at about 4.30 pm with mine and he only looked out the window at it. they use the same website to calculate the price of the vrt that you use. you can just turn up afaik. thats what i did anyway!

If the car is less than 6 months since first registration OR if it has done less than 6,000 km, VAT will be payable.

Most cars over 2 years old are not inspected, afaik.

I thought that they checked the VIN against a manufacturer database for these marques.

Go on a day it is pis*ing down. They're Civil Servants, and unless it's a high status car, they won't care.

This is true, if under 6 months old or has less than 6,000 km VAT will be payable.

It completely depends on the day and mood of the person you encounter at the desk. Dont be fooled by the rain either, they expect people to come on rainy days and even have umbrellas!! Speaking from experience btw.....

You would sometimes be lucky to get them too look out the window at the car.

When I cleared my Rs6 the guy in the VRT office went out to look at it. He told that he had never seen one in the flesh so to speak and that was the only reason he went out to look at it. The price was the same as on the website €13K

Every car I have imported has been given a visual check, just to establish its general condition. But they always looked for the VIN number on the car.
In the Wicklow VRO the only cars they do not want to see are classics, over 30 years old

Don't drill the number plates! Use the sticky stuff instead, it will look a whole lot cleaner.

When I cleared my two 9 & 4 years ago there was no inspection done. All I was asked was "Is it outside?", to which I responded: "Yes". Cars were 4 yrs old & 3 years old respectively at the time.

Got mine done in Tallaght- a 320d
She came out to look at the car but really only to get the VIN number
I was told this has to be "sent down to Rosslare to calculate the VRT because there are loads of extras on it" .The VRT was based then on what the Rosslare folks told them I should pay, which was what I had calculated myself originally.
    Much ado about nothing
I got the Tallaght autos place across the road from the square to do my plates, think it cost a tenner

Or you could just print the documentation of the internet yourself and fill it in with a bank draft for the required amount of the VRT calculator. I have done this 3 times, twice with almost spankin new vehicles and never had any trouble.

On VAT and 6mth old min or 6000klms, I've a slight issue, car I've spotted is a demo, only 4 mths old I would have to pay VAT in this situation, but if I bought it and put "someone elses name as the owner" and then "sold" it to myself in 2 months time, would there be any issues? Would VRT office look to see when I first got insurance on the car? Ferry receipts for crossing etc?

Just want to cover all bases

But how about cars that are not road worthy? For example, if you import a car with damaged engine would the retail value be judged fairly?

I wouldn't want to chance that....
If its a decent garage they should hold onto it for you until the 6 months are up

No. They only go on the outward physical condition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭rebel.ranter

I don't think they even go on physical condition, it doesn't pay to import a crashed car to save save VRT.

I think you would be on a very sticky wicket trying that. They will want to see invoices etc. You will not be able to pull this off easily, given that there would be a fair amount of money involved. don't try it is my 2c.
