Respraying chrome

I have an old Mongoose BMX frame that has some surface rust that I'd liek to respray and give as a Christmas gift to someone. Problem is it's chrome and I'm not sure what the best approach is for it? Thinking of a murdered out job, or at least satin black. Any tips on how to go about it?

I'm not too sure, but if you're getting a quote over the phone you'd better tell them that it's actually car sized and looks like a Ferrari. It might up the price a spot.

I know from experience of working on custom motorcycles that there is only one way that is both durable and long lasting, that is bead blasting the frame and then getting a surface finish like powder coating.
If you have access to spray paint equipment, water based acrylic is fairly durable on hard wearing areas especially when lacquered, however sanding the chrome off is a real PITA!
If cost is a big factor you could try sanding the chrome surface (a real PITA! I can't stress this enough), then using spray paint apply a primer and then several layers of your chosen topcoat. If using spray cans a can of primer and a can of satin black should be more than enough, it will look good in the short term but it will scratch easily if subjected to any kind of abuse, although judicial use of a black permanent marker can hide small chips!
Hope this is of help to you.

Thanks for the insight man. Bead blasting, how much on a bike frame? I can't stand sanding. If bead blasting is cost prohibitive what grit am I looking at to get the chrome off?

I was told this company was ok to deal with http://www.barelleltd.ie/
personally have not dealt with them, but they do bike stuff and seem to know whats involved as opposed to some of the big companies that do street furniture like railings. Probably no harm to give them a bell to find out a bit more. At least you would'nt have all that sanding!
