Is two a breast legal?

We had a talk at work today by a guy from local bikeshop (bike to work scheme) and he said legally we can't cycle two a breast. He was talking to a Garada and there was a recent case where a driver hit someone that was cycling two a breast and the cyclist was at fault for the car damages, not to mention the broken bike and collar bone suffered by the cyclist. Does anyone know if this is true?

As far as I understand, the statue states that you can't cycle more than two abreast, excepting overtaking. So two abreast should be fine by the letter of the law :)

I wonder what the real circumstances of the case were. Chinese whispers and all that...

On standard rules of the road, if the car plows into another road user, generally the car is at fault.

As for cyclist two abreast. It is legal. Loads of threads here about it, but then it is Friday :)

    It's legal
Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations, 1997.
    ...
    Pedal Cyclists
    47. (1) A pedal cyclist shall not drive a pedal cycle on a roadway in such a manner as to result in more than two pedal cyclists driving abreast, save when overtaking other pedal cyclists, and then only if to do so will not endanger, inconvenience or obstruct other traffic or pedestrians.
    (2) Pedal cyclists on a roadway shall cycle in single file when overtaking other traffic.

My suspicion that a large proportion of gardaí are just making it up as they go along continues to grow.

You're probably spot on there. I remember from a previous thread, Dirk was told by a Garda it was safer for him to cycle on the path.

Thanks for the replies. I assumed it had been discussed before and if the law had been changed then it would have been well publicised

The problem with the Gardai and such discussions is that their personal opinion no matter how silly always prevails.

I was also told by a cycle guard that I don't have to use cycle lanes if there is one provided.

I was told by "a friend" who was told by his friend (who is a guard) that you legally have to provide your own "Safety Helmet" each time you take one of the Dublin Bikes for a spin*...

    * may not actually be true

I was once told by a Garda to cycle on the footpath rather than the road (like Velo said).

A friend of mine (he is fresh out of Templemore), admitted to me recently that he actually wasn't too sure about certain "bike laws" when I was quizzing him about certain incidents on a recent night out.

Depends on gender, and if displayed in public:D

A garda friend of mine said that you are legally permitted to twat anyone who is a twat.*

    *Definitely not true

a traffic guardai friend of a housemate told me that we were not allowed to cycle two abreast.

So I corrected her and told her to look in her rule of the road manual.

She defended herself by saying ' ah but these bloody couriers and RLJ' to which I responded ' Maybe they're a bit unsure of the rules just like you seems to be.... I don't think it was a smart enough reply.

Does that mean they can auto twat or self twat?

There's no law against twatting yourself, regardless of whether you are a twat or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

You people are throwing twats around with abandon, most unpleasant.

....anyway, I can't resist pointing out the typo in the above post.....

"the statue states" - which statue would that be.......the one in Knock we're all going to see?:)

........sorry OP, couldn't resist it - if it was any other day of the week I'd have let it pass....
