    From the Limerick Leader:

    Best Wishes
The latest saga surrounding Limerick hurling pales into
insignificance with the sad news that one of the fans
favourites, Andrew O'Shaughnessy, has been diagnosed
    with MS (Multiple Sclerosis).
The heart-breaking news comes just weeks before his 25th
    birthday.
As a teenager the Kilmallock corner-forward made his first
Limerick senior championship appearance as a substitute in
the All-Ireland qualifier loss to Cork in Thurles in 2002.
In 33 championship appearances in the green of the county
O'Shaughnessy has already amassed 8-102, putting him
just behind Gary Kirby, Mick Mackey, Eamonn Cregan and
Richie Bennis in Limerick's scoring charts.
Leader Sport extends the best wishes of all GAA fans to
    'Shaughs'

I think this deserves it's own thread, terrible to see a player have to leave the game so young no matter who he is. Class act on and off the field, good luck to him in fighting this illness.

Yes agree it does, I wish him all the best.

Hurling will loose an amazing talent.

I'm assuming that means he'll have to leave the Army as well while he fights this illness.

Good luck with the battle Shaughs, your performances in 2007 will live on in many people's memories.

Sadly it is not curable :( It is a disease that affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other.

As a Limerick man living in Waterford I want to thank the soldier for the memories from 2007 and for all those magnificent displays. He's already acheived more than most could dream of.

Like the OP says, GOOD LUCK SHAUGHS!!!!

It's incurable but it is treatable.

All people with MS are not created equal, some a suffer bad disability others lead normal lives with no disability and others are somewhere in between.

Without speculating it is impossible to know what course his disease will take. It is possible he may even continue to play.

    Terrible news.
Here's hoping he can live a normal life.
    Excellent hurler.

Absolutely, no two people with MS tend to be affected the same way.

It can be a very progressive and disabling condition or it can be largely passive where you are in remission for long periods and then suffer occassional relapses, some people can be symptom free for many years. There are also new drugs on the market such as Tysabri that help alleviate symptoms for some people.

I wish him all the best, I sincerely hope that it goes well for him and that he's able to live as normal a life as possible. It goes without saying that to see him on a hurling field again would be truly inspirational for MS suffers

Couldn't believe it when I read it in the Leader yesterday. Total shock.

It's terrible that someone so young could have this disease. Good luck Shaughs in battling this illness. I'm sure you have everyone in Limerick's best wishes. Thanks for those all the memories and it's such a pity there wasn't a few more. The three under 21's and the days in Croke park in 2007 when you practically beat Clare on your own and that peno against Waterford to win the semi. My best memory as a Limerick supporter.

    Thanks again Shaughs.

Heard about this a few days ago but didn't no whether it was true or not :(.

Jeez, can't beleive this is happening to such a talented hurler.
So disappointing and I wish him all the best.
Thanks for all those good memories from matches. '07 especially.

    Good Luck Shaughs.
    (I'm seriously gutted now...:()

Wow, that's absolutely heartbreaking for him and his family, my thoughts go out to them :(

Awful news! He really is a fantastic hurler. Hopefully his career can continue for the time being anyway.
Saw him play first for St. Colmans against Gort in the colleges and I think he scored all but one score when they won the colleges title.
He'll be a terrible loss to Limerick, hurling and the GAA in general if/when he has to retire.

Being a Tipperary boy with a mother from Andrews club, Kilmallock, I have seen him play right up from 21 to senior. I went to a lot of Kilmallock club matches this year and it would bring a tear to your eye seeing the absolute delight on his face after they won the Limerick County Championship. For years now he has been the inspiration for my free taking style. He will be a serious loss to inter-county hurling and I would like to wish Andrew and his family the very best with his recovery.

Seeing as how this was bumped - does Shaughs still hurl with his club/county? Or does the disease preclude him from any kind of hurling?

hes hurling away with his club and only retired a few months ago from inter county due to loss of form.
