I graduated in may with a first class honours in mechanical engineering and I have been on the dole since (I have gained some experience by doing voluntary work.) At the moment I'm getting pretty fed up and am thinking of emmigrating, I am doing a distance learning masters in Renewable Energy which has kept me sane. There are two things I'm looking for advice on:

What country would be best to emmigrate to. i.e where are there plenty of jobs.

What website is good for looking for jobs abroad (apart from monster)

    Thanks for the help.

You are in much the same situation as myself, I just graduated then straight to the dole, a bit of work experience picked up working for free. I have been looking into emigrating permanently, I'm not sure if that is your wish or just to go for a year. If you want to go permanently, I'm afraid you probably dont have enough experience to apply for a skilled visa. It is about 12 months paid work out of the last 24 months in your chosen field. Check out the abroad forum on here, in the region section, it has a lot of posts regarding employment prospects etc in Aus, NZ and Canada.

Can't imagine it'd be easy to get a job anywhere without much experience. There are also restrictions on working as an Engineer, particularly in Canada you do have to be registered with the province and pass a test, I think.

As for visa's and the like you have to either get a company to sponsor you, or try going on those year long visa's, just show up and hope you get something. You'd want some neck to do that and I wouldn't hold your breath for an engineering position going out there as a graduate.

This is the conclusion I've come to since being in the same position and applying all over the place since last February. Your best bet might be to try Europe where you can work freely and along with that the rest of the EU is pretty much coming out of recession now.

i would recommend to you guys looking into the J1 18 month internships visa to the US. I did it in 06 after graduating in 04, and couldn't get a job then. there is lots of info in the living abroad section of boards.

And whatever you hear about the US there is still work in many areas, might be worth a look and is valuable work experience!
