Want to do a reinstall on an oldish laptop. It has an XP licence key on the back of it but I don't have the original CD to hand.
I went ahead and wiped it using another cd but when I put in the original XP key it obviously doesn't work. Is it possible to get in contact with microsoft and to use the original licence if I don't have the correct cd?
    Thanks

    It's a Toshiba.

The CD must match HOME or PRO as per license
The CD must be an OEM CD, Either TOSHIBA OEM or an unbranded OEM
    - for example a DELL/HP one won't work

Microsoft will not supply media , that's part of the OEM deal,
Toshiba will most likely wipe their hands off it at this stage

If they supplied a CD expect to pay about ~ €30 package and postage

    Beg, borrow or ebay ?

If you have a Retail XP CD on hand you can create of backup of it. Edit the setupp.ini file in the I386 directory and the burn off a copy. This will make it think it is a OEM copy.

Simply change the last 3 digits of the PID (should be 335) and change it to (OEM).
