I've noticed a few ads on tv lately for the new Mazda 3, retailing from €21,225 for the basic model (1.6 petrol, no metallic paint)

Does this seem a bit expensive to anyone else? For some reason it sounds a little too much for that car to me.

New base model Focus is €21,750 so it's in the ball park. New Focus does have A/C and Alloys though and is 1.6D.

Surely a Focus is a more desirable car so could charge a little more and still out sell the Mazda.

I have nothing against Mazda at all. They are a fine car, and have been based on the Focus for the last few years (not sure about the new one). I just think the price they are charging is a little on the high side. And now that you can get a higher specced Focus for a couple hundred more, why would you buy the Mazda?

New Astra is just around the corner so wouldn't be going for either of those until I've seen the Astra.

Mazda is a brand new car whereas Ford has been around a while. Mazda wouldn't be a volume brand in Ireland as Ford are so pricing would usually be a bit higher (I think).

Probably not advertised, but available special order like the RX8.

    I wouldn't consider a Focus as a desirable car.
In either case, the Impreza boxer diesel is a better value car.

Focus more desirable? Maybe according to Autocar et al.

Personally I think Fords are more likely to be sold to fleets or as hire cars in MUCH higher numbers and that the Mazda would be more distinctive (reletively speaking of course). The old one was a bit dowdy but this new one, although similar, is better.

There's an old Mazda3 back in the home place and I often think it looked really good in the CAD program with those subtle wheelarch blisters and all - it just never worked in full-size reality!

Are the Mazda and Focus not very very similar.

same chassis underneath I think. The new 3 is just a heavily facelifted old model afaik

Yep Mazda decided to use a modified version of the current Focus chassis on the new 3 as Mazda still saw plenty of scope for development on it. Ford have an all new chassis for next years new MkIII Focus.

I don't think it is expensive, according to carzone a new Focus 1.4 petrol Style costs €21,330 ex works, a new Auris petrol starts at €21330 ex works too, a new Golf petrol starts at €21,410 ex works, both 1.4 litre though the Golf has A/C as standard. The 3 starts at €21,115 and that is a 1.6 litre.

Also I'd doubt we will see the new MPS here, thanks to VRT and motor tax being based on Co2 emmissions cars like these are unviable to offer here. You could probably get one on special order though.

Of course next to the Subaru Impreze diesel all the above are overpriced even in diesel form.
