Any help is most welcome lads. I'm playing off 18 and have been for the past three years now. My bag is made up of a big mixed buch of clubs that i beg and borrowed from friends and family over the years.

I got a really nice present recently of a €300 Mcguirks voucher for helping a friend out and can't decide what to spend it on.

From talking to friends the best way of getting value from it would be to go to the shop and have a big of a haggle with them. I'm happy with my putter, driver and woods so I'm thinking of a new set of irons.

    I play about 15/20 rounds a season ?

If you were in this situation is there a particular set up buy ? would you wait for the January sales ? I don't mind putting maybe another €100/150 to it to get myself something that will really drastically improve my game.

Would you set a set fitted or by off the self ?

I now I’ve asked loads a questions but I’ve never had the money or this opportunity before for your advice is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

i think the january sales are best, as you currently have irons and do not need to rush out and buy more.. Ive been in the market for irons for months, but ive held back and am studying the market... but you are in a luxory position, so try to have patience, find out what you want, go down and try a feww irons before you purchase... hopefully the 300 can go a long way to giving you great irons for a decade or so

If you go for a new set of irons, then definately get fitted for them. Some brands let you buy individual irons, like Ping, so you could save a few sheckles by getting say a 5-PW set, and getting a utility/rescue wood to fill the void.

Really can you link this please I can't find it anywhere for Ireland. This would encourage me to get a few new irons. I've no need for 3-4-5 have the FYI breds. Also don't need sw or pw. Would only need 6-7-8-9

As far as I know this is the sales policy from Ping across the board. I was also told this last year when I was thinking of buying a set of i10's in my local golf shop. I'm also nearly sure that I read in a magazine recently that another major brand is now pricing irons individually, but I can't remember which one.

Thanks for the advise lads, think i'll hold on till january and see if i can pick up a good deal on this years clubs.
Can't help myself though and i'm going to head out to mcguirks tonight for a look ?

whats the shop like in the kinselly driving range ?

haven't been up there yet ? much choice ?

better off heading out to blanch or howth ?

i'm in the middle of all three so not traveling is not a big deal.

Also what do you think about Demo days ? any one attended one recently ?

    Cheers again

Haven't been to Kinsealy, but from what i've heard its the best of the McGuirks shops as they'll let you try out pretty much any of the clubs on the range. As far as I know they'll only do custom fit in Kinsealy or Blanch

Well I'd spend it on a rangefinder but as the lads say wait until Jan and see what deals are on. When you are in there haggle for best deal before you produce a gift voucher as they will keep prices high if they know thats how they are being paid.

no, i need a new set of irons, I need to get some consistency into my game.
the irons have at the moment are made up of four different sets, some graphite, some steel, some stiff some flex... I think you can see where I’m going with this.

so I’m thinking a set from 5 to sw and then a good quality hybrid will be the best option.

I could never justify spending €400 / 500 on a set of irons before but now with the voucher i don’t feel as guilty.

The next question is which clubs to get ?

Heading now to kinsealy, I'll let ye know tomorrow how i get on.

Yeah Kinsealy is the best for hitting clubs ryaner.
You should get a good set from prob 4i to SW, I don't think you'll get anything less than that unless as mentioned above Ping are splitting sets.

I wouldn't wait for the sales, as McG's don't reduce prices in January, due to the amount of Christmas gift vouchers being burned in peoples pockets!

In general none of them reduce prices on clubs in Jan, just a bit of clothing and the likes.

I think Mizuno MX200's would be suited to you and you should have a few bob change from your voucher for a nice winter jumper or pair of gloves:eek:

ok so i went to mcguirks in kinsealy last night. Staff very helpful and spent allot of time with me going through all different options without the usual Irish shop assistant attitude.

he let me try out any club i liked out on the range and it made such a difference in my choice,

I tried the new cobra s2 (€449) wasn't a big fan of them, just didn't feel right in my hands.
Also tried the Taylor made burner 09 (€539) and these felt nice to use. tried a set of x20's that were ok as well.

But as soon as i hit the mizuno mx100 (€329 and the cheapest club i tried ) they felt perfect.

Really nice consistency and really forgiving. Which I think is what someone like me (18 handicap) needs to start getting those numbers down.

They charge €30 for custom fitting and i think i'll get this done as well.

Might as well spash out now cause i'll be using them for the next 10 years.

might make the trip out to Kinsealy myself once I'm back on my feet. Have a fund of about €500 to put towards the new set. Depending on the deal I can get might try get new irons & a re-shaft of the driver.

Blanchardstown is definitely closer to me (well actually leopardstown is closest but they don;t do custom fit, and I don't like the staff in there any time I'm there), but if Kinsealy is a better set-up I might take the trek out there.

Anyone any comparison between Blanch & Kinsealy for getting a fit & trying clubs?

There ya go ryaner, I told ya!!

I even recommended the clubs, I called them mx200s, you knew what I meant though;)

To above poster^^^, you can't try clubs in Blanch at all, gotta be Kinsealy.
