Porsche has released first details about the new top version of the Boxster called the Spyder, which is making its world debut next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

This new lightweight mid-engined roadster weighs just 1,275 kg (2,811 lb) and is the lightest model in the entire Porsche model range.

Power comes from a 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Power output is 320 bhp (10 more than in the Boxster S). 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) comes in 4.8 seconds while the top speed is 267 km/h (166 mph) even with the roof open. Average fuel consumption is just 9.3 liters per 100 km (30.4 mpg).

reason probably is that it has NO rear window. That car is pretty sweet. It even has no radio, so you can enjoy the wind and boxer engine.

Porschepoint has posted a new set of pics. awesome looking car. more here.

Cant wait to see the rumored modern day 914.

I'm afraid I can't warm to this at all. It just doesn't look right, especially from the side. It has a fat *rse just like the 911 cabrio. Contrast this to the svelte lines of the current Boxster S Gen II... I know where my money would go

Why did some middle aged hairdresser stretch her black granny panties over the car in place of a softtop? DIY leak repair?

Am I the only one not impressed by a "lightweight" car with no back seats and no roof that *still* manages to weigh 1275Kg?

    A Lotus Elise weighs 725Kg!

Hehe, see the first picture on that second link, Porsche stuck under a bridge staying dry out of the rain because the driver didnt want to be seen with one of batmans wings on top of his new car

No radio, no PCM and no air conditioning to save ... 15kgs? I wonder who's having the last laugh here.

    997 Cabrio = Beyonce Knowles
    987 Boxster = Shakira
987 Spyder = That middle aged bird on Britains Got Talent. Good voice but, er, cosmetically challenged.

Yes, but an Elise is a glorified kit car (although I love it) and is somewhat under-engineered. A Porsche is a different ball game.

On top of that an Elise has what - a 1.8/2.0 L engine? Compared to a 3.4?

I think a 1275kg Porsche is deeply impressive and I want one :)

Ok, but am still struggling to figure out where Porsche put all the weight. A very comfy and well engineered current model MX5 2.0L automatic weighs 1095Kg (the superlight concept weigh 995Kg).

I would'nt call a car that weighs 1275kg heavy, a Honda S2000 weighs 1254kg, and I'm quite sure, you wouldn't call the Honda overweight.

Which makes the "lightweight" Boxter heavier:confused:
