Winning a car, what to do?

A bit of a hypothetical situation this one. There's a draw on in Dublin for a '09 Golf GTi. I put myself in for it. It would be fantastic to win but knowing my luck it would never happen.

But let's say I did. I'm on a learners permit and I would imagine no insurance company in Ireland would insure a guy with 3 months driving experience on a Golf GTi (and rightly so). The only options as far as I can think would be:

1)Selling the car - Would a garage take this car for cash? How much would you get privately (I think they cost 34,000euro new), and of course would anyone buy it?

2)Keep the car - The cost would be too much for me I think, but would a garage take it as a full trade in for a 1.4 Golf with a few optional extra's?

Best of luck mate but the reality is you could shave 25% off the retail price if you wanted the garage to take it back off you.

Boyle Sports gave away an Audi TT in a competition back in May, the retail price was 51k and Ballsbridge motors offered the guy 37k to "take it off his hands"

Check the T&C's of the competition to see if there is a cash alternative.

I was afraid that was the case, but it's to be expected. It's still an awful lot of money for me though. :)

Sadly there's not, they had the car on display where I bought the raffle tickets. It was lovely :)

Its a lot of money for most people! I wouldnt get hung up on it, you would still be getting a large sum of cash you wouldnt have otherwise had so cant really complain :)

Ah no, I'm under no illusions that I'm going to win it or anything but it would be fantastic if I did though. :) It was just on my brain this morning when I got up and I was thinking 'damn, what if I do win? What am I going to do, I'd never get insured.'.

Without a shadow of a doubt I would sell the car. I would try sell it privately first, but if I had no luck, then would see what a few garages would give me!

I was only messing with you, good luck with it anyway, you can "worry" about that when you win it.:)

Insurance shouldnt be a problem, at least not if your put down as a named driver, it wont be a big a deal as you think! Good luck on with the car though!!!

I nearly would have went :) just kidding. Gives me a bit of hope, I've never won anything either but bloody scratch cards. :)

Either way it's free money. Your options are to give it to a garage or to spend a few weeks of your life dealing with wasters, chancers and tyre-kickers for the sake of an extra few grand which you never had in the first place.

If I really liked the car I won, I would sell it and buy the same model but two years old and enjoy the cash I'm walking away with.

Let's say for arguments' sake that a garage will give you €30k for an '09 Golf GTi. Take the 30k, buy an '07 Golf GTi for €18k and put 12 grand in the bank to pay for your insurance for the next four years.

    Result.

Was that in Liffey Valley? I wanted to win one. Store it up for the next 20 years :D

If it's the GTi in Omni (Santry) then it's the old model. I think VW had these for sale for around €26k to shift them before the new GTI came out.

Still a cracking car, but you'd be looking at around €22 ish to sell.

you could swap me for my diesel mondeo and you would get insurance on that :D

Sold it privately. I was delighted, and the buyer got a new car at a bit of a bargain price.
