Gaming Without HD Attached??

Planning a gaming day with friends on the weekend and want to avoid an issue we experienced last time.
When we system linked 2 xbox consoles we were unable to play head to head on certain games. My guess is that the game updates were not identical on each box as one is a 'live' box and the other not.
Is it possible to play games without the hard drive being attached to the console? I'm hoping that this may sort the problem.
    Thanks!

You can clear the cache on the xbox with all the updates, this will delete the updates but they can be redownloaded with no problems.

To clear the cache on the Xbox 360 do the following:

    * Go to the Xbox Dashboard, select the System, and then select Memory.
    * Highlight the HD symbol and press Y.
    * Press these in the following order. X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X. (X,X,LB,RB,X,X)

There is an option under memory setting to do this now, the code is obsolete!

Could you not just get the off line xbox updated in your house?
