Im writing on behalf of a friend who just got a letter to say his Job seekers benefit will cease in ten days. He's starting back in FAS in January to finish his final phase so he only needs money till then. He will receive his last JSB payment next week and was told he can reapply but it could take a few weeks, sure thats useless to him this close to Christmas and with FAS starting in January.

What options are open to him if any? Thanks

He should apply for JSA, which is a means tested payment, to tide him over until he gets back to FAS.

JSA will likely take a while to process so he should apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance from his Community Welfare Officer in the meantime.
