    Hi

Any advice or info would be appreciated.

Im looking to convert the attic the problem is i want to put in a stairs as the room will be used by one of the kids as a bedroom.
The general consensus from the the builders i have had in to give quotes is that to have a decent size room i would need to extend out the main roof out to the side so the stairs could be brought up that way, as if i dont the stairs would come up in the middle of the room making the room small.

My question is would i get planning permission to extend the hipped roof out to the side , we our in an estate with houses on bothe sides. Anyone any experience of something similiar?

I assume that this is the attic above the main body of the house and you wish to construct a roofed stairwell along the gable of the house. If this is the case then you will require planning permission.

Yes thats basically it in a nut shell.Does anyone know from experience if the councils looks favourably on these plans as a few people have said that they ususally deny these proposals with hipped roofs etc , seems a bit strange

A lot of the planners are fairly approachable. Why not request a pre planning meeting with the local planner and discuss your proposal before going to any great bother with it. If you ring your local planing office they will give you details of the pre planning clinics.

It wont cost you anything and all you would need are a map of the property and a couple of sketches showing the proposal.

Once you alter the roof line yes you need it, how big is the attic space,i converted my own its 12ft x 11ft stairs off centre my lad loves it, put a decent handrail & Balustrades and it sets it off
