Gatso Van on the N4 Westbound

I was driving slowly and calmly to work this morning at about 9:15 @ 110kph. But when I went past Liffey Valley SC the car on front hit his brakes. So I done the same and seen why. There was a Gatso van sitting on the bridge where people turn off for Liffey Valley. Speed limit is 80kph.

But it never flashed at all. Do they have to flash? Or where the two of us got?

I was talking to some people in work this morning and it flashed for 6 of them.

I better go and update my satnav with these speedtraps, it's been a while.

 Ha ha, my aching sides.

The gatso van doesn't flash, if it did it would blind you.

Gatso has been in that general area a lot recently, seen it Friday night around 10pm inbound on the bridge.

ps, just ot confirm Westbound is the Outbound side, i.e heading towards Lucan...

In the face of oncoming traffic in poor light ?

:) Yeah well 110kph on my speedo is about 105kph. And if anyone uses that road every day knows that if I'm doing 105 chances are I'm in the middle lane sauntering along like everyone else.

It's only a short trip before the 120kph section so I don't mind if I was caught. It's a busy enough road and 80kph is justified so I'm not complaining about the limit.

But because it didn't flash I'm safe? Someone say yes so my day isn't a crap one :D

It flashed at a few people I know this morning too.

I would of thought getting flashed at night would be worse, no? My eyes take a while to adjust when I'm just passing oncoming cars never mind a flash bulb.

AFAIK it only flashes if it's taking a photo of the back of the car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,282 ✭✭✭BlackWizard

    ^^ That makes more sense.

I never checked my mirrors when I passed it so now I've no idea if I was flashed. I just thought it takes a photo of the car coming at it. Learn something new everyday I suppose!

Spotted that on the way out this morning alright, it's the first time I've seen it there in the morning since the road was upgraded. In fairness it's hardly covert so anyone getting caught is really being done for poor observation as much as speeding.

Which is what I would expect, I'm surprised it flashes oncoming traffic. OP, what direction was the van facing, was the camera facing oncoming traffic or the back of traffic ?

The back of the van was facing oncoming traffic. One of the windows had what I thought looked like a home security spot light you see in gardens pushed up to the window. I'm guessing this was a flash bulb of some type. The other window had a contraption of some sort. Probably the camera.

It's hard to remember, but does anyone know if they have two windows or is the flash side of the van actually solid but with a rectangle cut-out for the flash? Not important but I can barely remember it having a window on each rear door.

It, or one of them, was on the N7 outbound this morning. They seem to be doing a right old blitz for the last few weeks, I'm coming across one almost every day in the M50/N7/N4/N3 area. They do flash in the face of traffic at night, I've seem it a few times, not at me though. Also think they cop you way down the road and get you even if you've slowed down coming up to them, as it seems to flash at traffic not speeding at the point of passing it.

What happened to the (8 was it?) 'clearly marked' Primastar / Vivaro shaped ones that were launched in a blaze of publicity a year or two back - never seen one of these:confused: They all seem to be unmarked Transits.

Seen one on Saturday morning on the N7 outbound before the Red Cow Morans Hotel, and it too flashed. First time I've ever witnessed it.

Seems like there's a new kid in town alright. The last one I saw was on the M50 two weeks ago and was of the old style, no flashing despite there being poor light and people obviously exceeding the limit at that point.

Yeh, that's me. Was doing around 100kph but saw no flash. I'd got out of the habit of looking ahead at that sectiion of road because I hadn't seen a van there in so long. I don't think they can do the radar further up the road at the foxhunter anymore like they used to either because of those new bollards.

The only flashes I've ever seen is on the forward facing cameras that grab you from the rear(!)

    I'm currently on 1 point

I was keeping an eye out for this yesterday at about 5pm heading towards town. No sign. However, there was a so called unmarked car with one of those new little magic boxes on the boot parked entirely on the path before the off ramp into Liffey Valley.

On my last trip to Galway on that road I was passed by an Almera in the overtaking lane, doing maybe 110km/h and completely unaware of the unmarked Mondeo right on his rear bumper. He was pulled about 5kms down the road, and deserved every bit of it IMO. Whatever about speeding, poor observation does kill.

Dirty basterding thing caught me this morning. Well, I think it did. It did indeed flash. :(

Well, I think it was me it caught anyway, it was parked at the start of the ramp up to UCD, and I was in the right hand land of the Stillorgan Road.

Wish I had of read this before I left for college!

Just a quick question, do these have a certain range to where their camera faces? Do they focus on certain lanes?

The one on the N11 this morning flashed as I was near enough to it, but I was in the right hand lane, and it was just at the start of the ramp up to UCD.

    Cheers

The camera can 'see' about 50m I believe - you can take it for granted that you were caught to be on the safe side!
Were you not able to notice the van parked at the side of the road before you got towards it - its not as if it could be hidden there, could it?

    Cheers

Nah, I had just turned left onto the N11 from Foster Avenue and then I was overtaking a car in the right hand lane, who was also definitely speeding. Still being in the right hand lane, I was fairly close to it when it flashed like.

Im pretty sure thats just a tax/nct(?)/stolen car checker. Doubt it would read speed. Simply ANPR I would say.
