The key to a good short game is practice. I generally wouldn't use a pw that close to the green. If you have a sand wedge then i would try using that - it will get the ball higher into the air and therefore will stop quicker. Try and get 30 mins around a free green sometime with 5-10 balls. Practice, practice, practice.

Maybe try Youtube for some examples of how to play short shots.

It depends on whether you are getting the right ball flight but no spin or are you hitting the ball in too low and hard? Practise is the key either way, but good grooves and a softer ball help a lot once you have the hang of spinning the ball. Imo the key is to hit hard into the back of the ball. In current conditions you should be able to stop any shot from within 50 yards within 5-10 feet of it's pitch mark if you are striking the ball properly.

If you're a relative beginner getting stop shouldn't be in your head yet,if the ball is going off the green you're probably bladeing the ball a bit.
Fyi i play off five have quite a flat swing and get no stop at all around the greens yet it's the best part of my game bar my putting

That's cos your balls are too heavy.

when trying to lob the ball onto the green from relative close proximity, you should open the clubface and open your stance..

so, if you are right handed, then your feet should point maybe 40-60degrees to the left, but keep your open clubhead facing the target. then swing as you would normally do, but be sure to not turn your right hand over on the followthrough.

I cock my wrists and hit down on the ball. Don't be afraid. Always swing through and don't think too many swing taught prior to hitting it.

Recently I've been practicing to stop it on the second bounce. swinging the club face towards the target and pointing the face towards the sky.

    What shot are you playing.

I believe that if you are 40 yards out you should be trying to pitch and run the ball and stay away from the airball shot (Big Phil) as a bad pitch and run is going to be a lot better than a bad airball shot.

Should only be really going the high air ball shot if need to get over trouble.

Also LW will help going the high road instead of a PW.

this is exactly how i would recomend you go about it plus plenty of practice

there was a similar request here a few weeks ago if you do a search you'll find it.
In summary the answer was to grip the club well down towards the end of the grip, keep your feet close together and make sure to follow through.

    Its working for me!

There's a reason why Phil Michelson is often described as a "great lob wedge player", that reason being that the most players make a complete hash of trying to copy him. The advice above, although well intended does come from scratch/low handicappers who have the consistancy of swing to hit a lob wedge well most of the time.
The old maxim of getting the ball on the ground as soon as possible is going to get you as a beginner, more consistant results, so unless there's a bunker in the way, why not take a 7 or 8 iron and pitch/chip it on.

I use an 8 iron for the majority of in-close stuff.
Mostly it will be a chip and run. I vary the amount of carry-to-run sometimes with the same club by standing more upright (like a putt) with the heel of the club off the ground and playing the shot more off the toe of the club.
However, I'm kinda supposed to know what I'm doing so as a beginner I'd recommend getting someone to coach you on the basics. Then practice your technique and nail down a fail-safe shot that you can depend on almost every time. Sure, you might try a lob over a bunker to a tight pin the odd time but when you have 20 yards to go to the flag because you are short of the green on the fairway and there's no trouble in between, then you just need to execute your standard chip shot that you know will work.
Further out at about 40-50 yards, I'd always use my gap wedge (53 degree loft) and play it to bounce once and then stop... technique here is more difficult and the margin for error is high because you can blade the ball out the back or catch it heavy and not reach the green.
A soft, spinning (expensive) golf ball is a must to get it to stop quickly too but this kind of ball isn't suited to a beginner because it doesn't go as far and your bad hooks and slices will be exaggerated too.

It ultimately depends on what type of golf ball you are using - nothing else (considering you can pitch a golf ball that is)

Don't mind all the malarkey advice in these posts, it's solely down to your golf ball. Use a Pro V1x - it doesn't back up 10-15 feet, just usually pitches and stops a couple of feet at most. You'll notice the huge difference with immediate effect.

Once again ignore everything that everyone has said previously - total nonsense :)
