I'm going to buy a car next week and am pretty useless at the best way to haggle.

I have 5k to spend and pretty much know what i want, would it be unrealistic to think that i could get a car marked up at 5,500 for 5k cash???

Would i offer 4,800 and go up or just say 5k and no more?

Is there anything else i could drop off to lower the price like 12 months Breakdown recovery??

The best thing to do is:

    Look for a specific car.
Find the cheapest one for the year. note price
Find the one with the lowest mileage, note price
Then find one you actually like and use the other 2 prices as references.
Figure out how much the car is worth to you.

Aiming to knock a certain amount off a car is silly, Dealer A might have a car for €6k,
Dealer B might have it for €5k. Dealer A knocks €1000 off, Dealer B gives no discount.
    Same difference.

Likewise, if 2 dealers have 2 similar cars for €5,500, one may have lower mileage or be better spec, it may be better to pay the full €5,500 for one over €5,000 for the other.

Get as much of a warranty as you can. there's no point in paying dealer prices if you're not getting a proper warranty.

What make/model were you looking for?

its a buyers market. i work in sales (not in cars) but people have got to grips with the fact that business needs sales to stay alive. garages will not have much sales this of year anyway so there is no harm offering really low prices first off to test the water. as long as you are not arrogant at first you should get a response. straight out take it or leave it approach will get you no place. as long as you get across the fact that you are there as a genuine buyer and not just a time waster thats only there to pass the day. every where in ireland is willing to deal to survive. dont start too high as you will usually get the "split the difference approach" good luck with the buying

Personally I think they're right up there in the fugly section and haven't heard great reports but then again that's hearsay as I have never (or will ever) drive one. Don't expect much off the price with Bailey either - they work off a low mark up, price low, sell loads.

If I was getting a Primera (and there's plenty out there) I'd be aiming for a T Spec or SVE model to get goodies like satnav and leather. That's a basic model you've got there.

The basic models all have aircon and electrics, but the little differences like nicer seats, alloys and fogs etc make a difference. also the 5 door hatch is worth getting.

make sure that the aformentioned warranty is in writing! A verbal one is not a warranty!
Also bring a mechanic along to give the car a once over as €5k is still a lot of money to buy a lemon for!
