The Work Placement Programme (WPP) is designed to offer unemployed people, including unemployed graduates, the opportunity to obtain 6 months experience in a work situation.

The government have announced that there will be provision for an initial 2,000 placements under this programme. There two streams of placement with 1,000 placements allocated to each.

    • The first stream is for Graduates who, before 2009, have attained a full award at level 7 or above on the National Framework of Qualifications (e.g. Ordinary Bachelors Degree), who have been unemployed for 6 months and are also currently in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance.
    • The second stream is open to all other individuals who have been unemployed for 6 months and are also currently in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance. Under this stream, 250 places are being ring fenced for those under 25 years of age
Participants on both streams of the Work Placement Programme will continue to receive their existing social welfare entitlements from the Department of Social and Family Affairs during their 6 month work placement.

To apply for all Work Placements you must be 6 months unemployed and currently be in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance.

To apply for the Graduates placements you will also need to have attained, before 2009, a full award at level 7 or above on the National Framework of Qualification e.g. an Ordinary Bachelors Degree.

To register your interest in the Work Placement Programme contact any FÁS Employment Services Office

Once you have contacted FÁS to register your interest and if you are eligible for the Work Placement Programme, your record will be updated to note that you are eligible to apply for these placements.

FÁS will then provide you with details of any suitable placements that may be available in your area. You will then able to apply for a Work Placement directly with the company that is providing the placement.

The company will make the final selection, and if successful, you will begin your 6 month Work Placement.

This is a problem for someone I know; they are on the dole since May and in receipt of the Jobseekers Benefit. AFAIK they can't next to near the programme and are so keen to get a placement as there are a few in their field, and zero jobs.. Are exceptions made? Can someone switch from JB to JA?
