Driving Licence Question

A question for our Garda members here, I'd be very obliged if you could help me with this one.

I work in the Ambulance Service and in the past we'd often asked to produce our driving licence to our officer where a photocopy would be taken and the photocopy of your licence would be placed in a "file"!

Now no one ever questioned this practice as it was seen as a way that management would know if you were banned or they could see whatever information used to appear on your licence regarding road traffic offences.

This practice of producing your licence has become quite frequent now in some areas, indeed it was wondered by some in the job if a particular officer had a fixation on our driving licences.
A minor dabate started as to who has the right to ask you to produce your licence. One staff member said that another member of staff can request to see your licence at the start of the shift to make sure all was in order.

So I guess it's really more than one question, but,

Can your employer legally ask you to produce your licence to them for the purpose of photocopying it to place it in a file.!?
(Disregarding when taking up new employment you would need to show you have a driving licence where your employment requires you to drive)

Can your crew colleague request to see your licence to ensure all is in order?

Some of us believe that only a member of An Garda Siochána can ask you to produce your licence for the purpose of checking all is in order.

I do realise of course that you would produce your licence to insurance companies when insuring your vehicle.

    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for that.
The interest in producing your licence has been raised a little more in the past few days.

Nobody has any objection to management requesting to see your licence, but this is becoming a common request in some regions.

The question of a colleague requesting to see your licence has raised some issues as some see it as a right to see more than an informal request.
I guess this is one to raise with local management.

    Thanks again.

    +1 for above Bang bang.

Check you contract of employment....it is more than likely written in there somewhere that you must show your licence.

In regards the photocopying......they are on shakey ground photocopying licences. It is illegal to copy an offical document if its is going to be used for deception.

Also on copying them they must comply with the Data protection Act (legal forum might give more info there)

Thanks a million Nice Guy Always.

The issue of photocopying licence's was raised today and it was mentioned that this practice was illegal. I must add that this was not mentioned by a legal person, just one of my colleagues in conversation.

Again, it's not that anyone feels that management are up to no good, but it did raise an interesting debate as to who can legally request to see your licence and on what grounds, if any, that an official document like a driving licence can be photocopied.

    Thanks for all your help:)
