How much RAM does your iMac need/use?

I've a Dual Core iMac with 3GB of RAM which I occasionally use for encoding videos. I've recently installed Snow Leopard and have read that it can handle up to 64GB RAM. Surely this is excessive for most users?

Will getting any more RAM making a difference to my Mac? Is it worth the money?

Dual Core? Which iMac exactly is it? Unless it's recent, it's probably only expandable to 4GB.

64GB is the theoretical maximum. You are still limited by how much RAM your machine can take.

Anyway, 3GB is plenty for most things. That's all I have on my iMac running SL. And I've only 2GB on my new MBP. But if you are encoding video and that you'd probably see the benefit from a bit extra if your Mac can take it.

It's the aluminium iMac (7.1) released over a year ago. It's 2.8 GHZ Dual 2 Duo extreme.

Yeah, the 2008 models were limited to 4GB RAM. The 8GB iMacs only came out this year.

But have a look at how much 2GB chips cost at the moment. I'd say they're pretty cheap now. More RAM doesn't hurts and it's a good idea to max it out during the lifetime of the machine.

Absolutely excessive for most, if doing a lot of video work the more RAM the better but your iMac wont take 64GB
Think iMac is maxed to 8GB in current model

The Powermacs I think take 32GB so still not close to 64GB
