Powerpoint not opening on MacBook

    Hi

I have done a search but I cant see anything on this forum re the problem I'm having.

THere are a number of things going wrong since yesterday but getting Powerpoint back up for work is the most urgent!

By the way have been using Powerpoint and Word almost daily on my mac since a bought it in January

Firstly none of my icons are visible on the desktop when I open the mac. I can get into everything eventually by going through Finder.

Secondly My dvd player wont read the dvd in it. Since yesterday it has been saying there is an initailisation error.

Thirdly Word documents were not opening earlier but they seem to be opening again for me now.

    With regards to Powerpoint

    1. I cannot open powerpoint when I click on the powerpoint icon in the DAsh Board.

    2. Earlier I was able to get into the powerpoint presentations by clicking on the icon of an actual powerpoint but the language was coming up wrong! I tried to change the font but I had limited fonts (about five or six) and not the ones I would usually use.

    3. Now I cannot get into any powerpoint. They just wont open at all!

Has this happened to anyone else? Word and Excel are working fine.

Or if anyone knows why I cant have icons on my screen. I cant even drag icons on to it.

Everything that I had on my desktop yesterday is saved under desktop but I have to get to it through finder.

Should I get in touch with Apple? I have never had a problem before so I'm not sure where I should go to get help as I 've used PCs before this. The shop where I bought this mac is closed now

    Thanks in advance

Cheers for getting back to me so soon.

I read that on another forum as a reply to somebody who had a similar problem to mine. Sorry if this question seems really basic - I'm mostly self-taught when it comes to technology and I've never really had many problems but

    1. Will I lose anything that I've saved by installing and reinstalling?

    2. What does installing and reinstalling involve? Do I need the original microsoft software to reinstall? What should I go into to do this process?

    Sorry for my basic knowlegde!
