OK, so I tried to access my 1TB external drive, and got the following message:

Drive j:\ is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

As far as I'm aware its NTFS, not FAT32, and the hard drive is (literally) full, so I'm really hoping this isn't it dead. 1TB is a lot of data to lose :(

    It's this hard drive:

For the last day or two, upon startin gmy PC i've been getting an error saying Drive J's drive needs to be checked for consistency, but then it'd fill up a loading bar and tell me it was OK, so i actually had planned to back up my stuff. Typical that the day I plan to back it up is the day it all goes to shite for me

Any able to offer any advice or insight here at all?

    Cheers

    EDIT:

Righty-o, well I restarted the computer and it gave me the same message it gave me before, about checking for consistency. This time it didn't give me the all clear however, and instead my Desktop screen currently says (im using my laptop now)

    Checking file system on J:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is HD-CEU2.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk.

There's no moving graphic, loading bar or anything on the screen though. It hasn't moved for about 20 minutes now, and neithe the computer or External Drive are making any noise to assume they're being scanned or checked for anything. :(
