Wondering what is the difference between these cards.

Looking at the Komplett stuff there is only a couple of euro between these. 4870 Vapor X http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=442787 €145 and the Sapphire 4870 €137 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=485290but I guess no reason why I can't go for the Powercolour 4870 €128.http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=499129 They are all 1Gb GDDR5 and have a clock speed of about ~700Mhz......My max screen resolution 1400x1050. Looking to play some of new games. I'm sure the Vapor X has something special except for cool looking fan and go faster stripes.

    Any advice greatefully accepted.

    Cheers

The vaporX is basicially just a higher clocked factory card with a more effecive cooler
The Vapor-X received its name because it uses what Sapphire has termed "Vapor Chamber Technology" - a totally custom cooler technology developed exclusively to reduce noise when the card is being pushed to its limits, and to keep the card far cooler than any stock cooling would allow. This is how it works: basically, moisture/vapor is locked in a sealed, thin rectangular chamber directly on top of the GPU's copper heat sink. The vapor aids the cooling; the moisture helps move heat from the hottest parts of the chips. After the vapor evaporates, taking some heat further from the hottest core, on the edges of the chamber the vapor condenses when cooled, starting the cycle over again.

The clock speed of the PowerColour is 770 Mhz compared to 750 Mhz for the rest of em.

Hmm............. a different explanation above, I'm sticking to me guns LOL

Pity the Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 is out of stock. Will the stock be replenished at the stated date 4/11/09

It should be, it is the date our suppliers give us as to when they expect their delivery to reach us.

If i was you id go with the vapor x card. just for the lower temps and less noise.

    I have this http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=387435

The temps are great and it comes factory overclocked but the noise is terrible.

Have you any intention of upgrading the monitor in the near future? Because if not then either a HD4770 or a HD4850 will do a great job at 1440 * 1050.

If you intend going up to Full HD resolutions like 1920*1080 or above then a 1GB HD4870 would be best. Like I say depends on your upgrade plans.

+1 on the Vapour-X if you will be going down that route.

Upgrading my monitor, possibly early next year, some the HD models are coming down in price nicely so may be worth the investment e.g. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=431103 or http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=462328

The Vapor-X is worth its weight in gold imo, the bench here shows it doing its job nicely, bringing down the temp by 13 degrees. With regards to the clock, I wouldnt let that be a swaying point in this case, not only is the end result of minimal difference, but the small levels being done here can be achieved with ATIs own tools (no need for 3rd party crap or messing with Vs etc)

+1 I have a Vapor-X and it runs very quiet and cool. I've heard a lot that the stock fans can get very noisy.
