Yeah, delighted. I'd been thinking about one anyway.

Beeeauuuuutiful looking. What's the warm up time on it like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭Clinker

Congratulations on the purchase. If it had stayed there for a week, I might have overcome initial reluctance to throw more cash at coffee technology. But it was only a few hours!

    Enjoy!

Congrats on your new baby Mr. M. A Brewtus III / Mazzer Mini combo is my intended (but currently unachievable) next upgrade. Looks like a fab machine from all I've read about it.

Any chance of some form of write-up about it once you get it up and running? I'd love to know what it's like to live with.

About 35/40 minutes by several reports.

    Dero, I'll do my best.

Am I the only only one to spot the far more reasonable alternative here???

I spotted it, but thought it cheeky to say... :D

In fairness to her, she has alot to put up with..2 espresso machines going head to head in the kitchen for the last week, not to mention with 2 grinders..barely enough room to make a sandwhich!

    What was it pre-replaced with?

Not a pre-replacement, more of a step back in time! My gaggia classic, which had been in storage since the arrival of the brewtus. I had to see if i could live with it again before committing to sell the brewtus. It will do fine for now, until I find something better with a similar footprint. The classic can't be compared to the brewtus, but its a good machine none the less. It needs all the mods, but it can deliver a decent shot. That said, the scaledown process does involve putting some coffee quality blinkers on, and making counter-top reclamation the priority!

3 weeks in now and I'm still impressed.

Firstly; the Oscar moved on to new pastures new a couple of days after the Brewtus arrived. I mentioned to the right person that I was upgrading and he couldn't wait to take it off my hands. I issued him with some guidance on grinders and coffee, set him up in his kitchen, gave him some beans and off he went. I'm checking on him weekly at the minute to make sure he doesn't pick up any bad habits, I want to make sure he's getting the most out of it.

The new machine has a smaller footprint in my kitchen than the Oscar. It's slightly narrower so it goes further back into the corner than the previous machine. This was my first fear allayed. My second fear was the height but it's fine too, I took off the cup rails and they're now in storage so it slid in fine. I can't heat cups on the top of the machine due to height of my presses, never did this before so it's not bothering me now.

I was never a huge latte or cappuccino drinker, wouldn't drink them out and about and they were never my first choice at home with my preference lying firmly with a nice shot or a filter brew. Sure, I would have had one an odd time but really only got the steam wand out frequently for friends, this has changed. The texture of the milk I'm achieving is fantastic and it's so easy to do, everyone has commented on how smooth the coffees - referring to the texture of the milk I'm assuming. GRINDER*MAN had changed the factory tip for the Brewtus which by all reports is a bit naff to a 2 holed tip bought on the interweb (perhaps Bella Barista but I'm not sure). The tip he fitted leaves steaming milk almost fool proof, so easy to get a vortex going and equally as easy regulate the air getting in there. I do have some fine tuning in front of me but that will come with time. Oh, my latte art is still fairly crap, I'm going to need a one-on-one for some tutoring to improve. My wife will put the machine on during the day now for herself and friends, she never done this with previous machines so it's a bit of an indication how good and how easy it is to achieve a decent output.

The espresso has also improved though it's hard to word how. The shots are more consistent now than with previous machines. The easy adjustment of temperature and pressure is a huge plus. Coming from a Hx machine which have inherent temperature stability problems to one with the stable easy to adjust programmable PID and a good size boiler means that the shots become a lot easier to replicate with a lot less variance.

So I'm happy out have no have no hesitation in recommending the machine to anyone considering the leap.

    Hey Mr.M

Glad to hear that you're happy with the Brewtus - I trust there'll be no more upgrades in the near future!

The replacement tip is an Isomac two hole with a thread adaptor - I got it from Chris Coffee in the states, & it greatly improves things on the frothing front. The only down side is that the "no burn" steam wand turns into a "can burn" steam wand! Not sure why this is the case - must be due to the metal used in the replacement tip. Anyhow, I think it’s a price worth paying - the tip that came as standard really doesn't cut it.

Gotta say I'm missing the consistency & ease of use that you get with Brewtus! But if I had to pick one thing, right now I’d say it’s the preinfusion feature that I’m missing the most. I have a PID on my gaggia, which gives a constant start temp point, though not proper stability through the pour. I can still get a good shot, but only when all of my stars are in alignment! I get a lot more crap pour/early blond shots now. I think this is mainly due to the lack of preinfusion, which previously covered up all the inconsistencies in my dose/tamp technique (which of course is the real reason for my crap shots!).

Certainly no plans for any further upgrades.

I think the 'can burn' tip came about because the new tip is touching the outer no-burn steel wand and the heat is just transferring. I'm going to take a look at this in time.
