White bar tape - how to clean?

I have white bar tape and due to a chain coming off during recent spin its now a shoddy grey colour with oil stains etc.

So whats the best tried and trusted method to get the bar tape good as new ?

a) over the counter cleaner?
b) home remedy?
c) new bar tape !
d) dont put oily hands all over it (hindsight etc...)

If it's any kind of cork or synthetic cork tape it'll never be clean again.

I use Fizik white tape that has a leathery finish that responds well to cilit-bang or a brillo pad... but generally I just get used to the grey.

Keeps my bartape happy and white

(not an easy job though, needs quite a scrubbing each time)

Spotted quite a few pros this year with black bar tape and white saddles. There should be a concordant euro rule amendment.

Fizik Microtex white tape really doesn't need to be cleaned! I have it ages on two bikes now and it still looks unreal, just a quick clean with a baby wipe does the job every now and then. You can get those "carbon" look tapes which don't really dirty either, it's just that they feel really crap like cheap plastic!

Don't use it in the first place (probably not a helpful answer).

I bought white bars to go with the white saddle that way I have my splash of white front and rear without all the hassle.

The only way I got mine clean enough for my liking was to replace and after replacing it twice in 6 months I decided it wasn't for me.
