It should be enabled by default... in any case, right click on some text you just typed in any application, choose Spelling from the context menu, then make sure that Check Spelling as You Type is checked...

You can set it up so that when you have two fingers on the trackpad and click, it's a right click - I use that way (it's configured from System Preferences => Trackpad => Two Fingers => Secondary Click).

However, the quickest way would simply be to press Ctrl on your keyboard and click and that is also a right click...

first ensure your keyboard layout is british or irish. if it's word causing the issue then, open a blank document. go to tools. and select language. then choose UK english. then select default. all should be ok then. however old documents created before hand will not automatically spellcheck. you need to copy the whole document into text edit then recopy again into word.

This has been a problem with Word for years !! The only solution is to set the keyboard and system language to British. Word gets confused with an Irish locale and a British keyboard and vise versa. Even changing the language of the document as suggested above doesn't work. The next document you create goes back to the old format.

you definitely can get the spell check to work with the irish keyboard layout. I've done it for many an Irish school.
